Lady Gaga Explains The Inspiration Behind New Album ‘Joanne’

Release day has finally arrived!

The day has finally arrived! Lady Gaga’s fifth studio album is officially out and we haven’t stopped listening to it all morning.

'Joanne' is now available to buy, stream and sing along to at your heart’s content and we were lucky enough to catch up with the lady herself to chat about the inspiration behind it.

Speaking to us for our exclusive ‘MTV Asks: Lady Gaga’ show (which premieres today at 1:30pm, FYI), she said: “I’m a human being, but in that I thought to myself ‘Mark [Ronson, who co-produced the album], what am I going to write about that is going to relate to anyone? My life is so different and I feel so alienated.’”

The ‘Perfect Illusion’ hitmaker continued, highlighting how fame has affected her everyday life: “If I go out, if I go to the store I can’t have a normal conversation with someone, they don’t ask me normal questions or want to know about you or your emotions.”

The album is obviously very personal to Gaga, especially with the surrounding story of her Aunty Joanne - her Dad’s sister who died at a young age. During the album campaign, Gaga has taken on the persona of Joanne and often explains that she is the part that is missing in her life.

Speaking of how this translated on the record she told us: “On this record I’m my father’s daughter, I’m my mother’s daughter, I’m my sister’s sister, I’m my friend’s friend. I’m my grandmother’s granddaughter,” which really emphasises the human element that really shines through on this record.

We're seeing and hearing Gaga as she is, a human being, andwith all the crazy stuff in her past, this is something many people often forget.

'You can catch our full interview with Lady Gaga in our exclusive MTV Asks show on MTV Music (Sky 350/Virgin 310) at 1:30pm. Don’t worry if you miss this though, as we’ll be showing it again at 7pm on Saturday 22nd October.'
