Exclusive Interview: Secret Star Wars Backstory Revealed In LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens Game

The game's creators reveal the previously hidden events which lead up to The Force Awakens.

The newest Lego game, LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, brings the LEGO lols we love to the epic universe of Star Wars' Episode VII.

But its not just bringing the jokes - it adds previously unseen Star Wars backstory details too.

Filling in major plot that tells the story leading up to the events of the Force Awakens movie, upcoming levels such as ‘Rathtar Hunting’ reveal what happened to Han Solo’s big crew before we meet him in the movie. ‘The Crimson Cortair’ meanwhile, gives us some backstory on the bonkers characters we see in Maz Kanata’s castle-come-pub.

We spoke to Jamie Eden, Game Director at TT Games who make the video game, about the changes this brings to the Star Wars story, how it affects upcoming movies and the one Star Wars plot point fans will ONLY know from playing the game…

Hi Jamie! Tell us about the new levels you're revealing - what are they?

The New Adventures focus on events set in the time leading up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. These stories explore some of the characters we see in the movie, from iconic fan-favourites Han Solo and Chewbacca, to characters like Lor San Tekka, who is seen only briefly at the beginning of the film but leaves many questions about his background. It’s amazing to be able to tell these stories within the game, and I can’t wait for people to get to experience them!

How do they fit into the story we know from the movies, where in the story does the Rathar Hunting and Crimson Corsair come?

All the New Adventures tie directly into the Star Wars: The Force Awakens story, either from the characters featured or the scenarios they play out. For example, Han Solo mentions in the film that he “used to have a bigger crew” when asked by Finn how he caught the Rathtars. We’re able to tell this story with our “Rathtar Hunting” chapter, focusing on the crew that Han used to have, along with seeing some of the beasts out in the wild on a different planet.

The Crimson Corsair explores some of the characters that Finn meets at Maz Kanata’s castle. We see them briefly in the film, but they are some of the more interesting looking characters and the more I heard about them, the more I felt like we needed to tell their story, which includes them launching a daring raid to steal a First Order dropship from under the nose of a Stormtrooper patrol.

How did you go about creating these new pre-The Force Awakens plots and how involved were Lucasfilm?

When designing the New Adventures featured in the game, we discussed our ideas with Lucasfilm and worked in tandem with them to craft the stories we wanted to tell and how we could best incorporate within LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s been a true collaboration, and a lot of fun, figuring out which events, planets, characters, etc. to expand upon. There’s a lot going on in the greater Star Wars galaxy so we always made sure to be true and faithful to the Star Wars franchise.

Finally, what’s something about the Star Wars universe fans could ONLY know from playing the LEGO game?

Players will find out plenty of exciting new pieces of information that fill in some of the background to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. One especially cool part is that we’ll get to see Lor San Tekka’s journey back to the Jakku Village with the map to Luke Skywalker and the peril he encounters along the way. He’s a really interesting character that you don’t see much of in the film, and it’s great to be able to show off more of him.

'- LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released on 28 June 2016 on PS4, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and Steam.'
