Leonardo DiCaprio: 'I've Never Taken Drugs'
The Wolf Of Wall Street star says his upbringing has kept him on the straight and narrow...
Leonardo DiCaprio has claimed that he has never taken drugs, attributing his abstinence to his gritty upbringing.
Speaking in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the 39-year-old actor told how his childhood in an area of LA scarred by crime had put him off of illegal substances.
"There was a major prostitution ring on my street corner, crime and violence everywhere," he explained.
"It really was like Taxi Driver in a lot of ways. I grew up very poor and I got to see the other side of the spectrum."
And he continued: "I've never done drugs. That's because I saw this stuff literally every day when I was three or four years old.
"So Hollywood was a walk in the park for me. I'd go to parties and it was there, and yeah, there's that temptation."
And he explained that he had been coached by Jordan Belfort, the real-life subject of The Wolf Of Wall Street, on how he should approach acting as if he had taken quaaludes - a sleeping tablet which is misused by some.
He said: "I videotaped him on the floor, rolling around, and he really articulated to me that you have every intention of going to a certain destination, but your body doesn't go along with you.
"We shot it for a week, and it was a lot of chiropractic work for me because it was incredibly painful."
