MTV Review: 'Let's Be Cops' Is Arresting Fun!

These hobby-bobbies are on the fun side of the law...

UK Release Date: Aug 27
Certificate: 15
Running Time: 104 mins
Cast: Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr, Rob Riggle, Andy Garcia
Director: Luke Greenfield
Plot: Ryan (Johnson) and Justin (Wayans Jr.) are best buds who are down on their luck in LA. After attending a fancy dress party in cop uniforms gets them scores of female attention and respect, they use their newfound police powers to pose as cops full time. Obviously things turn ugly for the hobby-bobbies when they find themselves on the wrong side of some legit LA gangsters and corrupt cops. Hilarity, gunfights and some accidental meth smoking ensue.

Best Scene: Taking a call to check out a domestic disturbance at a sorority house isn’t the dream the pair of normal-guys-undercover-as-cops hoped for. In fact, they do the opposite of keeping the peace and get their blue butts kicked by some very fierce sorority sisters.
Best One Liner: “We’re the law, bitch!” commands Officer Chang (Wayans Jr) to a gang of Russianmobsters who look like they’ve been chiseled out of Chernobyl granite.
Date Movie or Mate Movie?: This is a BUDDY MOVIE (that boy mates, girl mates and boy-and-girl mates can all enjoy.)
Scene Stealer: The handsome silver goatee of handsome heartthrob from the 80s, Andy Garcia; who makes a cameo.

WTF Moment: Cops love donuts, apart from Chang who really hates nuts. Investigating a break-in at a hardware store sees Chang get a face full of nuts. And not the type of nut you would buy from a hardware store, or a wholefoods shop. No! Nuts attached to a fat, greasy, naked man.
Summary: The “buddy” movie genre has seen some “reel” bangers: Lethal Weapon, Beverley Hills Cop and… Air Bud. Let’s Be Cops is not on the same video shop shelf as these classics. Instead Let’s Be Cops is straight off the shelf of good fun with many, many laugh out loud moments, utterly ridiculous scenes and funny lines fly around like bullets from the shoot out scene in Heat. The “buddies” of Johnson and Wayans Jr compliment each other nicely – one is gung-ho, the other less so. But both join forces to make this an arresting popcorn comedy well worth spending your hard earned coppers on. Just take some Ritz crackers for the cheesy fondue ending!
