Celebs React To Ireland's Gay Marriage Referendum

Country is first in world to decide issue by popular vote...

Ireland yesterday became the first nation in the world to legalise gay marriage as a result of a public referendum.

The result was a landslide "yes" to equal rights - and celebs have since been taking to social media to express their pride and/or admiration of the Irish people for doing the right thing.

So happy Ireland have passed the law to get married there. Still genuinely shocks me thou, that this is only just happening!!

Singer Sam Smith tweeted: "So happy Ireland have passed the law to get married there. Still genuinely shocks me thou, that this is only just happening!!

"Such a long way to go. But we can't give up until we are equal."

And he also took to Instagram to share a picture calling for Australia to make the same move.

The pure joy of it. I'm so proud of Ireland today... We can all take pride in making history. Only sorry I can't be there to celebrate!

Pop star Hozier, whose Take Me To Church was the unofficial anthem of the "yes" campaign, was similarly excited.

"The pure joy of it. I'm so proud of Ireland today... We can all take pride in making history. Only sorry I can't be there to celebrate!"

While comedian Dara O'Briain had a similar sentiment: "Huge sense of pride over what has happened in Ireland, tempered by massive sadness that I'm missing the bloody party. #therealvictimhere"

And Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris was toasting the victory from afar: "I proudly raise a pint glass of Guinness and toast the people of Ireland for voting by a sweeping majority to legalize same sex marriage!"

Stephen Fry tweeted: "The Irish people spoke. And the words they spoke were Respect, Dignity and, loudest of all, Love. The sanctity of marriage has been upheld."
