This Gay Couple Recreating Their Pride March Photo 24 Years Later Will Melt Your Heart
Love is love.
It's Pride month and that means that people all over the world are celebrating the LGBTQ community in all its many, many glorious forms.
But one couple in particular are tugging on the heartstrings of people everywhere this week after deciding to recreate a photo they first took on a Pride march in Washington 24 years ago.
After posting both the original and updated version of the snap, 54-year-old Nick Cardello and 52-year-old Kurt English were shocked to see the post go quite so viral on tumblr and Twitter as this simple but powerful show of love resonated with bascially everyone with a heart who saw it.
The couple, who are now married and live in Tampa, Florida are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year and decided to mark the occasion by attending the Equaity March in Washington DC last weekend, 24 years after the March on Washington where they took the first photo back in 1993.
And the updated version of the photo was pretty significant moment for them too, as Nick tells Buzzfeed: "[It] was kinf of a second coming out for us.
"Most of [the photos we have posted] have been kind of generic — a lot of people get kind of sensitive to seeing images of gay men kissing, so I've always resisted posting them on social media.
But this year he said he felt it was "important for people to see that image," adding: "It's who we are."
The updated pic was taken in exactly the same place as the original - the National Mall - and clearly means a lot to the LGBTQ community online.
"What's interesting to see from the photos that have gone viral is the comments from the youth," Nick said. "They don't see many photos of gay couples getting old together. They're tagging their significant others, saying 'this could be us'. That was really cute."
"It's nothing special, but for some people who are still learning to love, it's encouraging to them."
We're not crying YOU ARE.
Ok we are too. Love is love and we love it <3
