7 Reasons London Mayor Sadiq Khan Is Our Main Man
Sadiq Khan became Mayor of London in May this year, taking over from Boris Johnson (the guy with luminous hair who got stuck on a zip wire).
As Mayor he’s in charge of taking care of London and standing up for all Londoners, and he’s already smashing it. In fact, we think we’re a little bit in love with him. He’s not just some uppity politician with a big head and an even bigger ego, Sadiq is the MAN. And here are 6 reasons why.
1. He started from the bottom now he’s here
Sadiq is basically Drake. Except that while Drake has become a record-selling singing/rapping worldwide sensation, Sadiq runs London. Both are G.
Sadiq grew up on a London council estate. His dad was a bus driver and his mum sewed clothes, and he’s so grateful for the opportunities that London gave him growing up that he’s mega-passionate about making it the best city it can be. LONDON, BABY!
2. He’s a feminist
One of the first things Sadiq did as mayor was to take down those ridic posters of semi-naked ladies on the tube who were only “bikini ready” because they’d undergone photoshop surgery procedures. He’s a self-proclaimed proud feminist and he’s made gender equality a big priority when tackling London’s issues.
He says equal pay and opportunities are important to him personally as well as politically as he has teenage daughters of his own and wants the best for them. He’s also talked about how much he respects both his mother and his wife and it makes us die a little inside. K-UTE.
3. He’s brainy AF
Did you know that Sadiq used to be a human rights lawyer? It’s totally true, and it proves that he’s been passionate about fighting for people’s rights since the beginning – he’s not just a power-hungry politician.
Plus Sadiq went to state school growing up. You know what that means… he DIDN’T go to Eton (omgaaad!). He’s definitely different from most politicians because he made it without being privileged – he was just super brainy and hard working. U GO, KHAN.
4. He’s pro-LGBT
That traffic light thing he pulled off was really cool. You know, the one where he created pro-LGBT traffic lights as a dedication to the LGBT community after Orlando and in support of London Pride? Yeah that was awesome.
Around 50 traffic lights around Trafalgar Square were changed so that the green men were replaced by different symbols that represented the LGBT community, like two female or two male gender signs, and two people walking together with a heart shape between their arms.
He was there at the vigil for the Orlando victims, and he also marched at the front of Pride in London. Sadiq knows that #lovewins.
5. He’s all about diversity
Any Londoner can tell you that London is multi-cultural and is host to many different religions. That’s just part of its identity. Sadiq, as the first Muslim mayor, is representative of this. He prioritizes the unity of ALL Londoners, no matter what race or religion. Cos we all belong to London if we live there!
6. He gaveth the night tube
THANK THE LORD FOR SADIQ KHAN. Say goodbye to anxious time checking and ridiculously long night bus journeys – the night tube is here! Which also means you no longer have a socially acceptable excuse to go home early. Now you’re just boring.
It’s something many Londoners have wanted for a LONG time, and it’s going to make things safer for people travelling home after nights out. Sadiq is sure that the night tube will mean more people are about at night, which means safer streets! You’re our hero, Sadiq.
(BTW he also froze tube fares so they couldn’t go up for the next 4 years). THNX.
7. He brings the bant
As if the man wasn’t talented enough, he also dabbled in stand-up comedy. He said he used to have a 10-minute routine.
So he’s funny too. What's going on?!
Basically we’re not sure how it happened, but our London mayor is an absolute legend. He’s like a modern day Batman saving Gotham, and he’s certainly given us all hope at a time when British politics seems to have completely crumbled, Brexit implied that tolerance of other ethnicities has gone down, and terrorism fears have spread like wildfire.
But guys, STAY CALM AND SADIQ KHAN. Cos he’s all about unity, love, tolerance, and just being a sound AF guy.
