9 Things We Learnt About Tyler Oakley From His Book 'BINGE' (& Our Interview With Him)
We're a little bit in love with him.
He's got nearly eight million subscribers on YouTube, he's won TWO Teen Choice Awards, and now he's a bestselling author. Is there anything that Tyler Oakley can't do?!
As well as reading his book BINGE in one go (it's impossible to put it down), we also got the chance to sit down and chat to the man himself - here's a few things we've learned about Tyler that might just surprise you...
1. His name isn’t actually Tyler
BOMBSHELL. Tyler opens the book by revealing that we’ve all been calling him the wrong name for years. Well, kind of. Tyler is actually his middle name. We won’t ruin the surprise of what he’s really called for you, you’ll have to actually read BINGE for that.
2. He’s a terrible driver
“If there’s one piece of advice I can give you in this book…don’t, under any circumstances, ride in a car with me driving”.
3. He hates people singing Happy Birthday to him
Tyler reckons it’s like punishing people for aging. Noted.
4. He sent a signed copy of his book to Oprah
But he addressed her as Ms. Winfrey. Obviously. Also lucky enough to receive a copy were Ellen DeGeneres and Beyoncé.
5. He lost out on his dream job
Which actually turned out to be a blessing. In a chapter called “Dream Job”, Tyler talks about how he made it to the final round of interviews for a graduate job at Google, but lost out on the role because the hirer was worried he seemed “too creative”. We think it all worked out pretty well anyway.
6. His back-up career is teaching. Or being The Pope.
Y’know, whichever. Ty also investigated butler school. How different things could have been...
7. He thinks Aladdin is the hottest Disney prince
Which is INSANE because it’s obviously Prince Eric, but Tyler does make a pretty good case for the sexy animated street urchin in BINGE…
8. It’s not been an easy journey to success
Tyler’s not afraid to get super real in BINGE, talking candidly about heartbreak, one night stands and what it’s like when your dad thinks he can ‘fix’ your homosexuality. We’ve been watching Tyler for nearly 8 years, but manages to be more open than ever in his book.
9. He’s probably the biggest YouTube fangirl out there
He told us that if he wasn’t making vids, he’d be one of the millions of superfans who send many, many, MANY tweets to their vlogger idols.
