A Zipwire Across The Thames Is Actually Going To Happen

Bring. It. On.

If you had a super power what would it be?

Most people would go for the ability to fly. Who doesn’t love the idea of soaring above skyscrapers and racing through the clouds whenever they fancy? Obvs Disney and other children’s films/ books have romanticized flying, as in reality we’d probably get kidnapped and sold as a circus freak, or forced to endure a lifetime of creepy lab experiments… plus, flying through cloud would just leave you drenched in rainwater.

But still, we can dream.

And this week it has emerged that the London Fire Brigade is about to make that dream a reality… kind of. Over three days, specialist firefighters will be rigging up a ZIPWIRE that will CROSS THE THAMES AT 40MPH SO THAT YOU BASICALLY FLY HEAD FIRST INTO PARLIAMENT. They actually officially described the flight as “superman style”.

NO BIGGIE.

The stunt is all in order to raise one million pounds for Evelina London Children’s Hospital and the idea was Andy Roe’s, the (take a breath) London Fire Brigade Deputy Assistant Commissioner, who’s son would have died at 9 years old if it weren’t for the hospital. He felt a zipwire across the Thames was a brilliant way to raise money for Evelina, and also to celebrate the London Fire Brigade’s 150th anniversary.

This is the very first time a zipwire across the Thames has been attempted. It’s accessible for one day only (2nd December) and will start at the top of St Thomas’s Hospital, zooming down to Victoria Tower Gardens – that’s 463m, and a descent of 52m. YAS.

Unfortunately, it all comes at a price. In order to raise the big 1 mil (which will go towards funding a new Clinical Research Facility at Evelina London) it will cost a whopping £50,000 to cross the river via the zipwire. That’s one pricey commute.

But there is another way – there is also a competition to win a ride! If you’re lucky enough to win, you’ll not only get the chance to fly across one of London’s most beautiful tourist spots, but also attend the champagne reception afterwards… just your average Friday.
