It's Bi Visibility Day And This Is How You Should Be Celebrating
With music, duh.
Happy annual Bi Visibility Day everyone! Today is a day dedicated to recognising and celebrating bisexuality around the world, and we couldn’t be happier about it.
People may be more accepting about gender fluidity these days, but bisexuality is still too often dismissed as a phase, being sexually greedy or even as totally non-existent.
The founders of the day – Wendy Curry, Michael Page and Gigi Raven Wilbur – reckon that that society has conditioned us to automatically label a couple walking hand-in-hand as either gay or straight, which is absolutely not the case.
More and more celebs are opening up about their own changing sexuality, with famous faces like Cara Delevingne, Miley Cyrus and our very own Nathan from Geordie Shore speaking out about how important it is to be accepting of everyone, regardless of sexual preference.
There are many great events to celebrate Bi Visibility Day going on around the world which you can check out and get involved with here. This year, Bi Visibility Day is also encouraging people to request songs about bisexuality on the radio with a shout out to the cause. We love this idea so we thought we’d put together a list of a few great songs to inspire you.
Lady Gaga – Poker Face
“No he can't read my poker face (she's got me like nobody)”
Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’, apart from being an absolute banger, is also an anthem for bisexuality.
Gaga, who is openly bi and regularly speaks out about bisexual rights, has previously said “that's really what [Poker Face] was all about – why when I was with my boyfriend was I fantasising about women.”
Demi Lovato – Cool For The Summer
“Don’t be scared cause I’m your body type, just something that we wanna try”
Though Demi Lovato has only hinted at her own sexuality ‘Cool For The Summer’’s encouragement of experimentation and acceptance of bisexual tendencies is undoubtedly great for the cause. Plus it’s huge tune, which always helps.
Queen – The Invisible Man
“Incredible how you can, See right through me,"
The date of Bi Visibility Day is in no way random – it was chosen in September to mark the birthday of famously bisexual Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
Written about the fronts people can often put on, The Invisible Man advocates being proud of who you really are.
David Bowie – John, I’m Only Dancing
“John, I’m only dancing, she turns me on, but I’m only dancing”
When we’re talking about bisexual superstars, they don’t come much bigger than David Bowie, and we’re crazy in love with this song about being coupled up with a man, but being attracted to a woman at the same time.
Green Day – Coming Clean
“I found out what it takes to be a man, now Mom and Dad will never understand”
Green Day’s Billy Joe has said ‘Coming Clean’ is about coming to terms with his sexuality while growing up. Now openly bisexual, Billy Joe has described bisexuality as a “beautiful thing”.
Panic! At The Disco – Girls/Girls/Boys
“But girls love girls and boys, and love is not a choice.”
Panic!’s Brendon Urie has previously said that both he and his wife are bisexual and that ‘Girls/Girls/Boys’ is largely autobiographical, stressing that the lyric “love is not a choice” is something he strongly believes in.
“I'd be honoured to call it a bisexual anthem - that's kind of awesome. I feel like (bisexuality) needs to be celebrated, because a lot of times I feel like people are ashamed and they hide it and they might be a little scared to open up about it. Being able to do that is a big step for me.” – That’s basically Bi Visibility Day in a nutshell right there Brendon!
Blur – Girls & Boys
“Girls who are boys
Who like boys to be girls
Who do boys like they're girls
Who do girls like they're boys --
Always should be someone you really love”
Blur pretty much covering all the bases here.
Christina Aguilera - Not Myself Tonight
“I'm kissing all the boys and the girls.”
Christina Aguilera isn’t a fan of labels but has regularly talked about how she’s attracted to both men and women. “If I want to be sexual, it’s for my own appreciation and enjoyment! That’s why I like to talk about the fact that sometimes I am attracted to women. I appreciate their femininity and beauty.”
Madonna – Human Nature
“Express Yourself, Don’t Repress Yourself”
Always very open about her sexuality ‘Human Nature’ is just one of many Madonna songs encouraging expression and confidence around sexuality. Hell, Madonna is pretty much the driving force behind ‘Bisexual Chic’.
So get these on, turn them up and let’s make sure this year’s Bi Visibility Day is the most visible (and audible) yet. Don’t let it stop here though, let us know your favourite pro-bisexual tunes request them on the radio or get involved with some of Bi Visibility Day’s other great events and activities.
