Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna Is Your 2016 Fitspo

Labyrinth x Spider-Man = Amazing Aqua/Aerobatics...

From Charlotte Crosby’s bum blitzto Zuu (a cardio workout where you move like a gorilla, frog and iguana to burn calories), 2016 is not short of wonderful and weird fitness inspirations.

But seeing Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna will take your fitness motivation to a whole other level, full of such feats of baffling biological amazingness, that you’ll be signing up to the gym in the Intermission.

So just what IS Amaluna? The simplest way to describe it is Labyrinth meets Spider-Man by way of a Shakespearean mash-up of The Tempest and Romeo & Juliet. In short, amazing acrobatics, aqua-batics and eroticised melodramatics combine for a tale of a young girl, Miranda, coming of age on an island full of fantastical creatures.

A swirling visual kaleidoscope of colours and contortionists, it’s as breathtaking a Cirque show as ever, thanks to a mind-boggling lack of safety harnesses, and a series of physical stunts that’ll have you scooping your jaw off the floor at regular intervals. From aerial artists balancing purely from their neck as they spin around to performers doing yoga in mid-air whilst channeling tantric yodelling, Amaluna offers enough visual bombast to entertain throughout. And with a cast that’s 70% female, it’s full of pleasingly empowered performances, to boot.

Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna is at the Royal Albert Hall, London, until 6 March 2016.
