Here's How Many Calories These Everyday Activities Actually Burn
No time for the gym? COOL, because these everyday activities still burn loads of calories. Find out more at MTV.co.uk.
When you’re winning at life as much as you are pal, finding time to actually go to the gym can be a right pain. It’s really far away from the television, you'll need to dig out some clean leggings, then you'll have to wait around for your machine to free up, and THEN there’s that extra shower and hair wash to tackle, all before you can even think about getting snacks. Sigh, no thanks.
Luckily you don’t technically have to be sweating your precious evenings away to still be burning those calories. Even the most mediocre of daily activities could have you working off the kcals, meaning that you can avoid the treadmill and scoff your pizza with absolutely zero guilt of any kind. Sort of.
Based on your average 150 pound person (a heavier person will obvs burn a few more), here’s how many pesky calories you’re getting rid of day to day, without even realising. Great news all round.
1. Doing the weekly shop
Did you know that lugging a loaded trolley full of goodies up and down the biscuit aisle in the supermarket for an hour will have you burning around 243 calories? Obviously you win some extra bonus points if you’re grabbing celery, broccoli and a few protein bars - and for bagging them up and loading them into the car afterwards, you’ll get even more of a sweat on. Go forth, buy food.
2. Brushing your teeth
Not only is it good for your pearly whites and minty fresh breath, but giving your toothy pegs a good scrub twice a day for two minutes will also help eliminate a quite frankly whopping 5.7 calories each time. Alright, it doesn't exactly excuse you from your 10,000 steps per day, but every little helps innit.
3. A snogging session
Well this one quite frankly works out for everyone involved. You'll get up close and personal with bae’s tonsils, you'll both release all of the endorphines, and a half an hour make out fest will also help you get rid of a hot and heavy 36 calories, depending on how into it you are. Having said that, half an hour is a LONG time to be solidly locked in by the lips with someone, so it’s your call.
4. Board games
Next time your mum ropes you into taking part in family games night, don't just instantly roll your eyes and go back to the internet. Consider the helpful fact that playing cards and board games for 90 minutes can actually burn a mega 159 calories through all of the excitement and intensity, which is pretty impressive. Probably even more if you get Monopoly out, tbh.
5. Getting your laundry done
On those rare days when you can actually be bothered to put the washing machine on, you’re basically working out (ish). For every fifteen minutes of folding clothes and putting them away, you’ll burn 37 kcals. Getting them out on the line is even MORE, because you’re bending and stretching, too. One hour’s worth of laundry antics is equivalent to about 100 sit ups, FYI.
6. Making the bed
Everyone knows that, while a clean bed is the best feeling in the world, there is literally no greater struggle in life than changing the sheets. It might take you ten million hours and see you accidentally strangling yourself with a pillowcase, but all that work means 72 calories are outta here by the time you’ve made your bed. And then you can sleep as a reward, which is even better.
7. Doing the dishes
Yep we KNOW it’s one of the worst chores going but hey - once you’ve scrubbed off that encrusted spag bol, a bit of chicken skin and your leftover pizza crusts for 15 minutes a night for one whole week, you’ll also have polished off 560 calories, according to scientists. That’s like, the same as a 2500 metre swim. WOWZA.
8. Hoovering up
If you’re feeling particularly energetic, you could even get the vacuum cleaner out. Y'know, that sucky carpet machine thing. Just thinking about it makes us tired af, but hoovering the whole house can apparently eliminate about 180 calories per hour - just make sure you keep switching arms to make sure you don't end up with just one Johnny Bravo bicep.
9. Drying your hair
Shout out to gals with loads of Rapunzel hair and therefore extra toned arms. It’s seriously hard work drying long locks on the regular. In fact, for every 15 minutes that you’re blasting the blow dryer, you’re burning 45 calories from your life. But um, hopefully not burning your hair while you’re at it.
10. Sitting while knitting, sewing or ‘lightly wrapping presents’ (lol)
Possibly a little bit niche, but if you’re into your peaceful, crafty, sitting-down-based activity sessions, an hour with your latest creation will still get rid of 34 calories on average. See - you’re JUST as sporty as everyone else, but you also create lovely, frilly things while you’re at it.
11. Playing with a dog/cat
Um, is this the best exercise programme you’ve ever heard of? Probably. Sitting down and playing with some form of animal is not only endless joy for you, but it’s also gonna burn off just over 100 calories an hour. Even better if you’re standing with them, as that knocks it up to 122, while walking or even running with them could take it to 272 kcals an hour. Aren't dogs the best.
Oi oi, cheeky - although let’s be honest, it does make sense. All that effort that goes into the build up of a shag is bound to burn the calories at super speeds, and according to statistics, a quick fifteen minutes of fondling will set you back 21 calories as an extra cherry on top. Which brings us to…
If you’re gonna bump uglies with someone, the priority is that you’re both having a lovely time. But as a nice bonus, a sesh of sexual activity (defined as ‘vigorous’ by the American Of College of Sports Medicine, so you better WERK) could also see you eliminate 54 calories. So there you go, bet you're glad you found that out.
