F**k It Fridays: PewDiePie
Celebrating the power of just saying "F**K IT!"
Oh, hello there, HAPPY FRIDAY. Welcome back to F**k It Friday - a weekly feature from MTV Breaks that’s all about saying a big “f**k yeah” to the most excellent people who’ve said “f**k it” (probably) and taken a leap of faith to make big things happen.
Cos it’s not about just having ideas – it’s about believing in yourself, and making them happen. AMIRIGHT?
So who’s next up in the FIF roll call of honour? Drumroll….it’s undisputed King of YouTube, PewDiePie!
PewDiePie’s got over 42 million subscribers and his job is to basically sit around playing video games, he’s living the dream!
Believe it or not, Felix Kjellberg aka PewDiePie was once studying Industrial Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, much to the delight of his parents who are both corporate big-wigs (his mum was named Swedish CEO of the Year in 2010).
He quickly realisedthat it wasn’t for him. As his peers talked about their plans to make it in the world of business, PewDiePie felt he had nothing in common with them and that it just wasn’t the life for him. When he told his parents of his YouTube-gamer dreams they said, “sitting at home playing video-games all day won´t bring you anywhere in life”, so he said “f**k it” (probably) and dropped out to pursue his (then relatively unheard of) dreams.
“Thinking about it now, it was utterly absurd. To get into Chalmers for industrial economics you need straight A's, but somehow I was happier selling hot dogs and making my own gaming-videos,” he told Sveriges Radio. It was absurd, but so is he, and that’s why so many millions have since come to love him!
If PewDiePie hadn’t said “f**k it” (probably) and followed this, at the time, extremely uncertain career path, the face of YouTube today would most likely be incredibly different! Major f**king Brofist to you, PewDie!
