Twitter Is Increasing The Character Limit And It's The Best Thing That's Happened To The Internet, Maybe Ever
Forget Christmas, Valentine's day and your birthday as today is way more momentous thanks to the long-awaited news that Twitter are totally re-vamping the platform to give us all an extended character limit on tweets.
While the limit will still technically be capped at 140 characters, direct replies to usernames (aka the bit with the '@' sign in front) will no longer be counted in your total characters along with pictures, vids and other media.
This means you'll now be able to post a hilarious meme of GIF without having to sacrifice valuable words out of your oh so witty caption and is frankly the best news we've heard since slankets were acknowledged as an acceptable fashion trend. (What do you mean they are still yet to be recognised as an acceptable fashion trend?)
Anyway, the character limit change isn't the only alteration Twitter are making and this is part of a whole load of snazzy new features designed to make our lives easier when it comes to getting our tweet on.
Here's a little breakdown of all the changes set to take place over the next couple of months:
- You will be able to retweet and quote yourself. You know, if you've been particularly witty and want to make sure bae has every possible chance of seeing it.
- The @username will no longer be counted within the tweet limit in direct replies. This means if you're replying to five people in one tweet, you will have more room to actually write some words instead of the handles taking up your entire limit.
- Media including GIFs, pics, videos and polls won't be counted in the 140 character limit any longer.
- Tweets that start with the '@' will now feature in your main timeline. This means you won't have to add in that annoying full stop at the beginning of a reply to make sure people actually see your reply, hurrah.
The changes will be starting to be implemented in the next few months although there aren't exact dates on the updates just yet.
Still, it's basically the BEST. DAY. EVER. Are we right? (We are right, don't even try to pretend we aren't)
