How Being A Good Person Will Get You Laid
The British Psychology Society have published some pretty interesting theories lately, and they're all to do with altruism – which Google translates as “the disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others”.
Well, it may not be completely selfless after you read this. BPS has just released a study indicating that altruistic people are perceived as more attractive to others… AND they have more sex!
Yep, according to the BPS, altruistic people are especially sexy to others due to very primal biological conditioning. They said that, back in the day, those potential partners who were seen as giving and caring for others were seen as more capable and desirable - they weren’t busy getting eaten because they didn’t think their morning berry-picking near the local preds (predators) through or trying to fix the hole in their badly put together tree rain-shelter, or whatever.
They were the smartest ones who had pre-prepared and were like, “sure, you can huddle under my far superior rain shelter complete with WiFi and built-in speakers”. Well, not exactly, but they were the superior members of the race. And remember, back then it was pure survival of the fittest.
So apparently being altruistic is inherently sexy.
Plus, a study published in the British Journal of Psychology last week has indicated that altruistic people are getting more action! In a survey of 192 unmarried women and 105 unmarried men (all young Canadian adults), those that described themselves as more altruistic also reported receiving more sexual attention from potential partners.
But surely they could be straight-up lying about how altruistic they were?
Well, a second survey featuring over 300 undergrads was done to tackle this problem, where each participant was given the decision to donate $100 of the money earned from partaking in the survey to charity. Sure enough, those who opted to donate and therefore took the altruistic root were having more sex!
The only question hanging over the survey is whether it doesn’t work the other way around – that people were being altruistic BECAUSE they were having more sex, and were just in a fab mood.
Whichever way round it is we reckon this is deffo an excellent incentive to be charitable. Sharing is caring! And donating is mating.
