It's World Mental Health Day Today, Here's Why It Matters
We ALL need to get to get talking about mental health, and today is the day.
October 10th marks World Mental Health Day, which pretty much makes today THE perfect day to talk about all things mental health.
What with one in four of us experiencing a mental health problem every year, it’s safe to say we all need to get to know this topic inside out. Not even just for ourselves - unfortunately the odds that someone you know is going through a hard time right now are pretty damn high.
From more common mental health problems like anxiety to less common ones like schizophrenia, mental health covers a wide spectrum of conditions which can affect people to different extents – from mild to severe.
Starting conversations about mental health is so important, because a) it reminds us that there’s no shame in having a mental health problem, b) it reminds us that other people are experiencing the same thing, and c) it makes us feel more comfortable talking about the way we’re feeling (which is one of the key ways we can keep our minds healthy).
And just like you wouldn’t ignore a twisted ankle for a long period of time without talking about it or trying to get treatment if things didn’t improve, you should NEVER have to suffer in silence with a mental health problem. We need to look after our mental health just as much as our physical health and understand that seeking help and treatment is nothing to be ashamed of.
This Mental Health Day we’ve got info about different mental health conditions, personal accounts of mental illnesses you may not know much about, and some quotes from big namers who’ve got vocal about their experiences.
Get to know this Mental Health Day and, most importantly, get talking!
