Just How Much Sugar Is In Those Delicious Hot Drinks We All Love So Much?

SPOILER: A terrifying amount

If, like us, you find it so much easier to get through the day with aid of some sort of double-whipped, extra caramel, white mochachino, something, something coffee, you might be in for a shock.

Action On Sugar, a group of specialists concerned with sugar and its effect on health, have tested all of those deliciously indulgent high street hot drinks and found that things are actually even worse than we could have imagined.

In their survey of 131 hot drinks, they found that over a third had more sugar than a can of Coke (not diet) and that in the worst cases these drinks contain over TWENTY teaspoons of sugar. That’s THREE TIMES the maximum ADULT daily allowance. F**k.

As a nation, the UK drinks around 1.7 billion cups of high-street coffee from the 18,000 outlets around the country. Action For Sugar use a rating system to show how unsafe things are in terms of sugar, 98% of the drinks they surveyed received a red rating (the worst one, obvs). That’s a lot of people drinking a lot of very unhealthy drinks.

The worst offenders are Starbucks with 7 of the 10 most sugary drinks coming from them. Check out the list of the top 10 most sugary drinks below with the terrifying full list here. Basically, if it sounds delicious RUN AWAY.

It’s not just the obvious ones either. Ever got Chai Tea Latte from Starbucks because it seems kinda healthy? BAM 13 teaspoons of sugar!

Pretty scary stuff. BRB we’re off to get a tap water or something.
