10 Tiny Changes That Can Have A Positive Impact On Your Mental Health

Feeling a bit ‘meh’ and suspect your mental health has something to do with it? While seeking professional help via your doctor is always an option, there are some little things you can do to try and boost your mood today, with minimal effort required.

1. Start running
Aerobic activity has been proven to reduce anxiety, as well as triggering the release of endorphins, our natural antidepressant. A great reason to stick your trainers on and run like the wind!
2. Download the Headspace app
Train yourself to be more mindful in just 10 minutes a day using this nifty little app, available in the App Store now.
3. Put. The Phone. Down.
Yeah, you need your phone for the Headspace app, but we’re talking about all that time you spend comparing yourself to total strangers on Instagram. Even Kendall Jenner takes a social media detox every now and then, with the model telling Allure magazine, “Sometimes I delete Instagram or Twitter or Snapchat off my phone for a couple days.”
4. Go outside
Sure, binge-watching Netflix on a rainy Sunday is great, but make sure you go outside and get some fresh air. Even better if you can get to a park, as spending just five minutes in a green space has been proven to improve self-esteem.
5. Eat well
We all know how good junk food tastes, but we also all know how gross you feel if you eat too much, with sore tummies and spotty faces just two of the unfortunate side effects. Make sure you’re getting your five-a-day and your required vitamins on the regular, and then that Friday night pizza won’t make you feel nearly as grim.
6. Spend time with people who make you happy
Most of us are guilty of spreading ourselves thin, whether it’s because of school or work commitments, or spending too much time with people we don’t ACTUALLY want to hang with. Avoid wasting your time with people who don’t make you happy and make a date with your besties or siblings instead.
7. Avoid alcohol
Obviously if you’re under the legal drinking age you should be doing this anyway, but even if you’re not, you might want to take a break from booze to see an improvement in your mental wellbeing. It is a known depressant, after all, and you can totally party sober – just like Kimmy K, who isn’t an alcohol fan.
8. Start keeping a diary
You don’t have to write in it every single day, but the act of writing down how you’re feeling or anything that you’re feeling less than great about can be cathartic, and reduce those negative thoughts in your mind.
9. Act like a kid
No, we don’t mean throwing tantrums, but think about all the activities that made you happy in your younger years. Rollerblading? Bouncing on a space hopper? You can still do them as an adult and we guarantee you’ll feel better for it.
10. Get more sleep
Never underestimate the power of a full eight hours. Create your perfect sleeping conditions in your bedroom, put your phone on silent and get those Zzzs.
