Scarlett Johansson Just Threw MAJOR Shade At Ivanka Trump
Scarlett Johnsson made it VERY clear what she thinks of Ivanka Trump when she starred as the President’s daughter in a fake perfume advert for Saturday Night Live.
It started the way any perfume ad might, with a woman (played by Scarlett) floating through an elegant ballroom in slow-mo in a sparkly gold dress, while being shot admiring glasses from all angles. But then the woman is identified as Ivanka Trump.
The voiceover tells us that Ivanka Trump deserves a perfume all to herself because “She’s beautiful. She’s powerful. She’s – complicit”. Seeing as the word ‘complicit’ is only used for people who are actively involved with others in something immoral, Scarlett is throwing MAJOR shade at Ivanka. Why? Well, the ad explains it all.
“A feminist, an advocate, a champion for women. But, like, how?” the sensual voiceover says. “Complicit, the fragrance for the woman who can stop all this, but won’t.”
Ouch. Oh, and when Ivanka looks in a mirror to do her lipstick, Donald Trump is used as her reflection.
So what was Scarlett implying? That even though Ivanka might publically call herself a feminist, she isn’t one as she doesn’t stand for gender equality and women’s rights. Instead, she supports her father’s administration and acts as his feminist shield against accusations whenever his actions seem anti-women. Ivanka’s constant reassurances that her father loves empowering women and promotes gender equality have the power to excuse his sexist words or actions in many people’s minds.
Although it was a funny sketch, there was a very powerful message behind it. Whatever you think of Ivanka Trump, it’s always good to question what it means to be a feminist and support gender equality. Just because someone calls themself a feminist doesn’t mean they are genuinely empowering women or working to further gender equality, even if they think they are.
After all, actions speak louder than words.
