New Zealand’s Claire Hobbs has courted controversy online by advertising this handbag, which is genuinely made from an actual cat.

According to Buzzfeed, Claire, who explained that no animals were killed or hurt in the making of the unusual item and has advertised her work on Trade Me, started learning taxidermy almost 15 years ago, and decided to make this particular cat into a bag because ‘he had a particularly nice face, and the rest of him was squashed’.

Stuff reports that the roadkill handbag was kept in the freezer for three months, while Claire ‘checked community noticeboards for lost pets’.

The majority of the cats she uses areferal and shot on a friend’s farm, soshe does not take commissions.

The post received mixed reactions online, with some people being fans of the bag whilst others weren’t so keen:

Responding to accusations that her work is ‘disrespectful’, Claire told Stuff: “To spend all that time on tanning and sculpture and making it brand new shows the utmost respect.

“I guess because it's a domestic animal people get a bit funny about it. I don't kill animals for my work, it's not as though I go around snuffing out animals thinking this'llmake a nice handbag."
