There’s A Lot More To This Wentworth Miller Meme Than Meets The Eye
Think before you meme, everybody
“Today I found myself the subject of an Internet meme. Not for the first time” is the innocuous start to an eye-opening Facebook post DC's Legends of Tomorrow star Wentworth Miller shared last night.
Memes are everywhere these days. They’re a part of life, we chuckle at them as they make their way down our Facebook feeds and then we move on. The meme in question though, has an important story behind it.
In 2010, Wentworth Miller had put on a bit of weight, no biggie. Unfortunately though it’s not uncommon for celebs who put on weight to be criticised online. In fact, it’s worryingly common. The above meme is one such example of something that happens way too often and in this case, it’s a snapshot into a very difficult time in Miller’s life.
The ex-Prison Break star described the story behind the photo in a heartfelt Facebook post. In 2010 he was depressed. This is something that he’s since bravely talked about publicly but at the time, very few people knew.
“Ashamed and in pain, I considered myself damaged goods,” he said, “and the voices in my head urged me down the path to self-destruction. Not for the first time.” At the time he found some solace in food, it made him feel better and was something to help him get through the pain he was feeling, as a result he put on a bit of weight, “Big f--king deal”.
He was later spotted by the paparazzi with “a rare smile” on his face and the photo circulated online with a number of unpleasant, body-shaming headlines. Such is the way with the internet, the photo has cropped up again and again over the years and though he admits the first time he saw it, “it hurt to breathe” he has since learned to live with it by assigning his own meaning, namely, “Strength. Healing. Forgiveness”.
So though in this one particular example, Miller is doing much better now and has learned to deal with the image that continues to circulate, it teaches an important lesson. There could be any number of reasons a person’s body or the way they look might change, it’s not something for us to judge them on or make comments about online.
Miller signed off simply, “Someone cares. They're waiting to hear from you. Much love. - W.M.” Much love indeed W.M.
