YouTuber JusReign Was Made To Walk Around An Airport Without His Turban On
He's spoken out about what happened.
On Monday, Jasmeet Singh, who you might know best as YouTube star JusReign, was flying from San Francisco airport. After going through a body scan, metal detectors, and a swab test, he says he was asked by TSA (Transportation Security Administration) to remove his turban.
After asking if his turban could just be patted down and apparently being refused, Singh says he was told he could either remove his turban or leave and miss his flight.
Singh complied as he felt he didn’t really have a choice, and after security found nothing - because as he points out, “a turban is just cloth” - Singh made the reasonable request of a mirror so that he could re-tie his turban without having to leave the room not wearing it.
Seems fair enough, but TSA apparently said there were no mirrors and Singh had to walk all the way across the terminal to the nearest bathroom to re-tie the turban.
Speaking to Vice, Singh said that his turban represents “dignity and courage” for his Sikh religion and that walking around without it is akin to asking someone to walk around without their underwear.
As Singh points out, the issue here isn’t that they made him remove his turban. They have safety protocol and whatnot to follow. The problem is that they weren’t prepared to treat the matter sensitively; they didn’t consider that Singh would need a mirror to re-tie his turban and that he definitely wouldn’t want to walk around in a busy airport not wearing it.
Basically TSA, if you must check turbans, just buy a mirror.
