The Best New Music Of The Week: Azealia, Lorde, Kanye, Years & Years
Tune up and wind down with these four quarters of magic musical pie...
You could say we're fans of good music here at MTV.
So we're going to start bringing you the bestest, hottest new tracks every week. Enjoy!
Memo - Years and Years
MTV has been behind London three piece Years & Years for ages and Memo is a glacial lullaby, fusing warped loop pedals over disparate piano chords. Lead singer Olly’s glowing vocals make Memo that blissful early morning-end of weekend sundowner.
Flicker- Kanye West Rework
This week’s been a big one for asking the pressing question - What Would Kanye Do? WWKD when his wife posts oily photos of herself all over the internet? Applaud. WWKD when handed Lorde’s lead track for The Hunger Games? Throw it down a well and inch it slowly back up, dripping in tar and gloomy. ‘Flicker’ is less of a rework, more an answer to the question: ‘What Would Kanye Do to prove that he’s still a musical don?’
Don’t Tell ‘Em (Lorde Live Lounge) - Lorde
Someone takes Lorde’s track and messes with it, so Lorde takes someone else’s and does the same. Fair play. Just like Kanye slips ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ into first gear to cruise, Lorde takes Jeremih’s DJ Mustard produced bounce along and black widows it into her velvet web. A live lounge future classic, we think.
Chasing Time- Azealia Banks
YES Azealia! Three years of blowing hot air has finally forced her out of the sauna and into the sunlight and what an entrance it has been. Dropping ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ as a complete surprise on Sunday night has been the sweetest treat of the week; as a body of work it’s arguably one of the best things we’ve heard this year. MTV were lucky enough to premiere the monochrome video for ‘Chasing Time’ below, and nod your head in agreement that she’ll come out of this a year top trump.
