You'll Never Guess Why Thief Returned Lupita Nyong'o's Oscars Dress
Pearl gown recovered from hotel toilet after phone tip-off...
First the good news: Lupita Nyong'o's distinctive pearl-adorned dress from The Oscars - which was stolen from her hotel - has been recovered!
Now the weird news: The thief apparently returned the dress and notified US gossip site TMZ because he was outraged to be told that the pearls were fake.
The Calvin Klein dress was reported to have been created with 6,000 Akoyo pearls and to be valued at £100,000 - but the criminal reportedly took a few of them to an expert for sale and learned that they were not real.
But rather than just dump his loot, he then called TMZ to expose "Hollywood's fake bulls**t" - having already popped the dress in a bag and returned it to an unused bathroom at The London Hotel in West Hollywood.
However a source connected to Calvin Klein apparently told TMZ: "Did anyone ever say they were real from Calvin Klein? I always assumed everyone knew they were fake, but I guess not."
Detectives are reported to be working with the owners of the dress to confirm its authenticity, but insist that whether the pearls are real or not won't affect the case.
Nobody has been arrested yet.
