“Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26,” his family told Rolling Stone.
“He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”
Many of Miller’s friends, collaborators and peers in the music industry have paid tribute to the kind, talented star on social media, sharing their shock and sadness at the news.
Diplo shared some of his favourite memories of times with his "misunderstood" friend, saying: "He radiated positivity, but there wasn't a balance. The other side was he was deeply insecure and always found substitution for what was missing in his life."
"For a second think about the people around you and make sure they are always aware of the love," he said. "Don't take a second forgranted. They might need you and you don't even notice it because you're too busy. Always gonna love you Mac."
Countless other musicians, from Kid Cudi to Shawn Mendes and J Cole, with Cole offering his help to anyone in the industry who may be secretly struggling, like Mac was.
"If you don’t feel right, if you feel you have a substance problem, if you need a ear to vent to. If you uncomfortable talking to people around you. Please reach out to me," he tweeted.
Chance the Rapper also shared his devastation, saying: "Beyond helping me launch my career he was one of the sweetest guys I ever knew. Great man. I loved him for real. I'm completely broken. God bless him."
All of the tributes are utterly heartbreaking, as each and every person shares their love for Mac the person and the rapper, ensuring that the world knows how phenomenal he was to have as a friend, in addition to his incredible talent.
Kehlani shared a heartbreaking post, revealing how they had many plans to hang out and work together just this coming week.
"[It's] rare you meet people in this industry that make you feel like home, make you feel human, because they’re so human too," the singer posted on Instagram.
"Utterly heartbroken. I love you, man. I can’t comprehend talking to someone damn near everyday and wake up and they’re gone. I will miss you so much [...] I’m gunna miss my friend. RIP malcolm."
Kehlani ended her tribute with a very important message to all, urging everyone to "check on your friends.. even the strong funny ones."
RIP Mac, we’ll cherish you forever.
