This Week's Must-Hear New Music Round Up: Major Lazer, Gorgon City and Bear's Den

Check out the very BEST new music in our weekly round up here...

The summer months are sometimes considered a bit dry when it comes to new music and albums. But, if you have been reading each of MTV’s weekly new music round ups (where we put together all the very BEST new music together for you in one easy-to-digest list), that just doesn’t seem to be true. Time and time again, we’re blessed with amazing music.

This week: Major Lazer has worked with almost every single person in the music biz for his new track ‘Cold Water’, featuring plucky up-and-comer Justin Bieber. He’s got a bright future ahead of him, that Bieber. Elsewhere, Gorgon City have dropped a tribal banger that made everyone in the MTV office have a little dance, HONNE have finally turned up with their debut album featuring the earworm ‘Someone That Loves You’ AND MUCH, MUCH MORE. Enjoy! Have a good weekend guys.

Singles

Major Lazer Ft. Justin Bieber & MØ – Cold Water

Pop music is 'so exciting' right now. Just take a look at two of 2016’s biggest tracks so far: Drake’s ‘One Dance’ (still breaking chart records) and Rihanna’s ‘Work’. Both songs, flirting with dancehall beats and incorporating diverse sounds and Eastern influences, push what people might be expecting from commercial pop. It’s a time of great experimentation.

And this experimentation doesn’t stop with ‘Cold Water’. Co-produced/written by Benny Blanco and Ed Sheeran (is there anyone who didn’t collaborate on this song?), the track is full of acoustic guitar licks and the sort of alternative, original lyrics you’ve come to expect from MØ: “Save me from my rocking boat/ I just wanna stay afloat”.

Last year, Major Lazer's massive single 'Lean On' became Spotify's most streamed song of all time but only managed to get the group to No.2 on the Official UK Singles Chart. However, just hours after release, 'Cold Water' is already at No.2 on iTunes. Could the Lovebox headliners finally get the chart topper they deserve?

Earlier this month, MØ told us she cried the first time she heard it. So was it as good as you were hoping?

Gorgon City Ft. Wyclef Jean – Zoom Zoom

When he’s not entertaining people during the commercial breaks on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Wyclef Jean is busy featuring on tribal, dance floor-filling bangers with Gorgon City. It’s not a bad life, is it? Following a spoken word section from Wyclef, ‘Zoom Zoom’ lets rip around the 3:30 mark. Having a party this weekend? Put this one on your playlist.

Enrique Iglesias Ft. Tinashe & Javada – DUELE EL CORAZON (English version)

Tinashe puts into perspective just how little we all really do in the week. In the past few days, Tinashe has dropped the playful, flowing ‘Superlove’ and the massive house track ‘Just Say’. Like…what have we done in that time? We’ve just been to the pub a bit. We're not very good adults are we? Plus, to further put us to shame, the king of the Latin charts himself, Enrique Iglesias, has recruited Tinashe for the English version of his chart stormer ‘DUELE EL CORAZON’. GO TINASHE! ONE DAY WE WILL ADOPT A WORK ETHIC LIKE YOURS AS WELL!

Cher Lloyd – Activated

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Cher Lloyd said she has been taking her time with new music: "I wasn't going to just record something and release s**t for the sake of having a song out." The 22-year-old went on to add: "My fans deserve something that's honest and comes from me. It's my new phase. Everything is about to change." What do you make of the new, more mature Cher Lloyd?

Pitbull Ft. Flo Rida & LunchMoney Lewis – Green Light

Pitbull has unveiled his collab-heavy new track ‘Green Light’ featuring Flo Rida & LunchMoney Lewis. With its funky guitar slapping and heavy beat, get ready to hear this one in your local Oceana for the next few months.

Netsky Ft. Macklemore & Digital Farm Animals – Rio (Remix)

Set to a furious pace, this brass-heavy new song from Netsky comes as we head into the final few days before the 2016 Olympics in Rio begins. Macklemore might have secured a lot of chart success alongside Ryan Lewis, but it remains to be seen if he can emulate that as a featured artist. Regardless of its commercial performance, we love the booming energy on this.

Albums

Bear's Den – Red Earth & Pouring Rain

Supported by a really beautiful piece of album art (does it remind anyone else of 2011’s ‘Drive’ as well?), Bear’s Den’s 'Red Earth & Pouring Rain' is the follow-up to their 2014 debut, 'Islands'. The former trio (now a duo after Joey Haynes left the band earlier this year) have created an album that isn’t 'as' folk-y as their previous work, but this new record, not sounding 'a world away' from Fleetwood Mac or The War On Drugs, could make for the perfect driving companion.

HONNE – Warm On A Cold Night

Following a series of EPs released over the past two years, HONNE’s debut is finally here. The highlight may well be the earworm collaboration with Izzy Bizu, ‘Someone That Loves You’. If you enjoy that track – and why wouldn’t you – don’t be surprised if the rest of the album is a whole lot more mellow. Perfect to chill to, HONNE are worth your time. Plus, the singer’s name, Andy Clutterbuck, is like something out of a Roald Dahl novel. What’s not to like?
