Angelina Jolie has called her upcoming live action film Maleficent “A very beautiful story.”
The Hollywood beauty plays Disney villain Maleficent in the flick, which fleshes out the tale of Sleeping Beauty’s bad fairy, who curses the baby princess Aurora at her christening in the 1959 animated version.
Elle Fanning plays a teenage Aurora in the live-action re-telling while Jolie’s real-life daughter, Vivienne, plays a younger version of the princess.
“We all know the story of Sleeping Beauty so we know Maleficent, we know what happens at that christening but we’ve never known what happens before it,” Jolie said of the tale in a new featurette released by Disney.
“We’ve respected the classic, we’ve tried to bring you what you love about this story. We also hope to bring a world that you’ve never seen before. It’s a very beautiful story and I think it is very different from what people are going to expect.”
“It’s the classic story of Sleeping Beauty plus so much more,” Elle added. “I always felt, when I watched the animated movie, that I wasn’t super scared of Maleficent, I was always intrigued with her.”
Maleficent writer Linda Woolverton, who also wrote the screenplay for animated Disney classic Beauty and the Beast, explained: “I watched Sleeping Beauty and came up with some ideas that revealed more about the character."
"I created a past for her that takes us up to the moment she cursed Aurora then takes us past that moment from Maleficent’s point of view.”
“It’s a reinvention not just a retelling of the same story.”
Maleficent is out in the UK on 28 May.
