EXCLUSIVE: Mario Interview
The smooth crooner is back with two flicks and a sexy new sound...
'Let Me Love You' chanteuse Mario says one of the best things about his recent foray into acting is the snogging.
The singer's first acting role is as Miles in dance and music flick Step Up which is out on DVD this week. He told MTV.co.uk, "I don't get embarrassed by kissing scenes, I love them. It gives ladies a chance to see what I can do!"
And it all came as a bolt out of the blue for Maz, whose 'LMLY' was a worldwide smash when he was just 18, "I had no acting lessons; I was given the script and it all pretty much happened on the spot.
"I loved working with Anne Fletcher, the director. She was very open to me and encouraged me to lay my ideas for the character on the table. That gave me a lot of confidence as an actor and made me want to take on more challenging roles," he said.
His part in Step Up has since led on to a role in new flick Freedom Writers with Hilary Swank - and it was quite an eye opener, he tells us.
"My character Andre is way more aggressive and narrow-minded, at the beginning, than Miles. He is from the ghetto and very emotional, very inside. The hardest thing for me was bringing up all those old emotions that I'd never had a chance to release, or wanted to release, before, and I did it through Andre."
Films may have kept the star busy for the past couple of years, but we can now reveal it's all about the music again.
"I've been in the studio recording my new album 'Go' with Will.I.Am, Pharrell and some of my other favourite producers, I'm also going to be doing a duet with Alicia Keys.
"This is a new, sexier, harder more mature Mario. Usher and Ne-Yo watch out: I'm going to smash the charts!"
Step Up is available to rent and buy on DVD now...
