Mark Ronson Interview

The producer tells all about Amy, Lily, Britney and his plans for a Mighty Boosh album

Mark Ronson is a hot-shot producer who in the last few years has worked with the worlds hottest pop artists.

Christina Aguilera, Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Robbie Williams have all benefited from his magic- swing influenced horn heavy- touch.

The New York based knob twiddler- who was born in Britain- released his first record Here Comes The Fuzz in 2004. This year his Versions LP of covers came out and included the hit single Stop Me.

We chatted to Mark as his new single Oh My God hit the shops

'We saw you on tour recently at Glastonbury, how was it?'

'Mark': It was incredible and really special. There is something that makes the crowd so excitable. It helps when youre doing covers though.

'Tell us about your live shows?'

'Mark': The whole thing of the show is its like old-school funk. We have an amazing band including Stuart Zenden (Jamiriquai) and lots of singers coming on.

'Are you pleased with the reception that Versions has had?'

'Mark': Its doing so well- theres no way to explain it. Working on the Amy (Winehouse) and Lily (Allen) albums made people aware of who I was. I just made it because I wanted to and Ive always been a fan of bizarre covers of songs.

'How did you pick the songs?'

'Mark': Its as simple as them being my favourite songs. A lot of DJs made to do remixes of songs but I wanted to re-do them from scratch.

'How did you pick the vocalists for the covers?'

'Mark': Its just people who are my friends. With Lily and Amy having such successful albums it made me look like kind of genius. Because on my last album I had lots of cameos I didnt want to do it this time but everyone became famous.

'Your first album was all Hip Hop with loads of legendary rappers on it, will you do a rap record next?'

'Mark': Theres so much I want to do. I dont know if I can fill another record of my favourite rappers. Whatever I do next it definitely wont be a covers album.

'Who else are you working with at the moment?'

'Mark': I just did a song for Candie Payne and Im in the studio with Adele at the moment. I just did a remix of a Bob Dylan song too. Its the first time hes allowed it.

'Who do you love working with?'

'Mark': Ive never worked with anyone who is a dickhead. Lily is one of my favourite people to produce though. Weve talked about going back into the studio soon.

'Anyone else you want to work with?'

'Mark': The crazy thing is I met the guy from The Mighty Boosh the other day. I told him I would kill to produce the album from the TV show!

'Youve worked with loads of rising stars, who are your tips?'

'Mark': Id say definitely Wale, Richard Swift and this singer called Britney Spears.

'Have you worked on her new album?'

'Mark': I havent been asked.
