Matt Smith For American Psycho: The Musical

Doctor Who star Matt Smithis to take the lead role in a stage musical based on Brett Easton Ellis' controversial novel American Psycho.

The role was famously played by Christian Bale in a 2000 movie version of the book, but the stage version is expected to feature original music and lyrics.

Smith has today begun rehearsals for the show, which will open at London's Almeida Theatre on 3 December.

It is planned to run until 25 January, but could transfer to the West End or Broadway if all goes well.

The ensemble cast also includes Ben Aldridge, Charlie Anson, Jonathan Bailey, Katie Brayben, Cassandra Compton, Holly Dale Spencer, Susannah Fielding, Simon Gregor, Holly James, Lucie Jones, Tom Kay, Gillian Kirkpatrick, Eugene McCoy and Hugh Skinner.

Smith will be replaced as Doctor Who by Peter Capaldi.
