Maximo Wow Fans at 100 Club
The Geordie outfit and a few hundred fans get sweaty at album launch gig
Maximo Park treated a few hundred fans to a very intimate gig in Central London last night (April 2) to celebrate the release of their new album Our Earthly Pleasures.
Singer Paul Smith and co took to the stage at the cosy 100 Club at about 9.30, clearly in good album-release-day spirits, and proceeded to romp through a set of both new and old material.
They got things off to a sweaty pogo start with the mighty Graffiti, then played a few new album tracks including Girls Who Play Guitars, and A Fortnights Time, which went down like a glamour model in a footballers dressing room.
Smith, looking resplendent in a black suit, tie and trademark bowler hat, was in a very talkative mood, offering lots of love to London and loyal fans, but not to ebay, which he said is where his tie would end up if he was to take it off and give it to the fan on the front row who was begging him for it.
Also impressive was Smiths shiny ring (insert bum joke here), which couldnt help but be noticed as it sparkled away just inches in front of pogoing fans.
After smashing their current single Our Velocity, one fan shouted: Youre still the best band in the world!, which led to club-wide chants of Max-I-Mo! Max-I-Mo!, ringing out for quite a while.
The band looked touched and got a bit shy for a minute.
Following several more new songs, an explosive rendition of their classic Apply Some Pressure, and talk of subjects including fingers, rubbish dates and bands that say the same thing every night (thats just lame! said Smith), Maximo brought the set to an end.
But before they could tuck into their album-release-day Bucks Fizz, the Park were summoned back for an encore, which comprised Kiss You Better, Parisian Nights - the final track off the new record " and Limassol (thanks to huge Maximo fan Vera from Hungary for letting us check all these song titles off Pauls set-list, which she cunningly swiped from the stage!).
Nice work, Maximo. Our Earth was pleasured.
