PJ Harvey Crowned Mercury Music Prize Winner
The singer has become the first artist to win the award twice...
PJ Harvey has beaten the likes of Adeleand Tinie Tempahto be crowned the winner of this year's Jools Holland, PJ told the audience: "Thank you for the recognition of my work on this album. It's also good to be here this evening."
"When I last won 10 years ago on September 11, 2001 I was watching the Pentagon burning from my hotel window."
She continued: "So much has happened since then. This album took me a long time to write. It was very important to me. I wanted to make something meaningful, not just for myself but for other people, and hopefully to make something that would last."
The star added that she was "delighted and happy" to have fought off tough competition from the likes of Adele, Tinie and Katy B, stating that her triumph will inspire her to continue making good music.
Harvey - real name Polly Jean Harvey - explained: "It makes me want to continue to go about my work the way I always have done which is taking great care and seriousness over it and it just encourages me to keep doing that."
"I'm a writer that works all the time, I write every day so already my work has started to develop into what will be the next project."
Adele was earlier forced to cancel her performance at the star-studded bash after being struck down with bronchitis.
The Someone Like You hitmaker told The Sun: "'Im gutted, I feel really ill, I'm trying not to pass the germs on to anyone. I really wanted to sing but I can't hit any of the high notes."
