Michael Phelps Suspended For Three Months

The 8 gold medal winner suspended over 'pot pipe'

Swimmer Michael Phelps has been suspended from competition for three months after photographs showed him to be apparently smoking cannabis.

The photo appeared in The News of the World newspaper, and shows Phelps inhaling from a type of glass pipe which can be used for smoking weed.
The tabloid paper claimed the shots where taken at a student party last November when Phelps was on a break from training.
By suspending Phelps from competition, USA Swimming, the sport's governing body, said it wanted to send a strong message to Phelps because he had disappointed so many people although they did state that no anti-doping rule had been violated.
In an interview with his hometown newspaper, Phelps apologised for his regrettable behaviour:
'This was stupid, and I know this won't happen again - It's obviously bad judgment, and it's something I'm not proud of at all.'
Phelps won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics last year and has gone on to become one of the most recognizable athletes in the World, appearing on shows Saturday Night Live and MTVs TRL as well as endorsing many products such as Omega and Speedo - Although cereal company Kelloggs have announced that they have dropped the gold medallist as the face of Kelloggs Frosted Flakes.
