10 Reasons Miley Cyrus Deserves The Best Birthday Ever
Miley Cyrus might be one of the most controversial artists in music at the moment, and people are everything from horrified to confused at her bizarre music videos, Instagram posts and stage costumes.
But today(23rd November) is Miley’s 23rd birthday, and we think she deserves the best birthday party imaginable. Why? We won’t just give you one reason, we’ll give you ten:
1.She’s a big spender, but she spends it right
At an American Foundation for AIDS Research auction, a slightly tipsy Miley outbid everyone to buy a Ryan McGinley print of a nude woman… for $300,000. Talk about an impulse buy!
Miley commented on what a good cause the charity supports, saying she wanted to “break down people’s walls that have been built up around sexuality. I’m obviously not too embarrassed to talk about these things”. We know she’s not, and thank god too, because she aims to “start an open dialogue” about these issues. And she’s definitely got people talking!
2.She’s a good friend
You can rely on Miley to be there when the going gets tough. When she was only 15, she turned up unannounced at a Nashville charity concert hosted by country singer Jeffrey Steele in memory of his 13-year-old son, and asked to sing a duet with Jeffrey onstage in his son’s honour.
Earlier this year, she took part in the 13th Annual LA County Walk to Defeat ALS to support celebrity Pilates instructor Mari Winsor who suffers from the disease. She even supported a hand-made t-shirt that read ‘I heart Mari’. Aww.
3.She’s always been excited to help others
Back in 2008, when she was just 15 years old, Miley sold her old clothes and personal things on eBay and donated all money raised to a charity that helps people receive better healthcare, social services and education in the US. Three years later, she admitted that sometimes her thoughts about the good she wanted to do in the world would keep her awake at night.
Miley recently used her famous tongue in an attempt to sell a piano for a higher price at a charity LGBT auction… and it worked! The piano sold for an astonishing $50,000. We just hope it was cleaned first…
5.She doesn’t want anyone to miss out
In 2011, Miley went to Haiti with the Starkey Hearing Foundation in order to hand out and fit children with hearing aids. She said “I grew up around music and couldn’t imagine what it would be like for my siblings and me if we couldn’t hear the magic of music”. Miley then went back to Haiti to do it all over again because she loved the experience so much.

In 2012 she posted a picture of her “favourite accessory” on twitter – a blue badge that reads ‘homophobia is a social disease’ – with the hashtag ‘stopspreadinghate’. Considering Miley undoubtedly has more than a few diamond rings among her private collection, this tweet says it all.
7.Her dedication to a cause will last a lifetime
In 2011, Miley got a permanent tattoo of the equals sign on her middle finger to support same-sex marriage.
When she explained it she likened the issue to racist oppression, saying “without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin colour?” Makes sense to us!
8.She sent a homeless guy to accept her own award.
Miley famously appointed Jesse Helt, a homeless guy that she met through the charity My Friend’s Place in LA, to accept her best video of the year award at the VMAs “on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth”. He also said in the acceptance speech that “though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I have the same dreams as many of you”.
Unfortunately things blew up when it was discovered that Jesse was wanted by the police for breaking into an apartment, but he soon turned himself in. And guess who publically issued statements of support about the hard lives of the homeless, and then funded his legal costs? Yup, our girl Miley.
9. She is at one with the earth, AND down to earth.
Miley released a video campaign to raise awareness about wolf killings in British Columbia where she is seen spotting bears and getting oh-so-excited about nature. She also talks about how her life could have been and says that when she meets inspiring people she starts thinking, “ok, what I do is really unimportant… I can’t believe I’m not a biologist, I’m a popstar, that’s ridiculous”.
But what she does say is that “if I didn’t do those things, then I wouldn’t have the voice that I have to be the megaphone for what these… amazing people have researched for so long and can teach me”.
10.She has her own amazing charity
Less than a year ago, Miley founded the Happy Hippie Foundation which raises money to help the homeless, LGBT youth and other vulnerable sectors of society, and it’s doing so well that she won an award for it!
Miley said, “I know you’re going to look at me more if my (breasts) are out, so look at me. And then I’m going to tell you about my foundation for an hour and totally hustle you”. Is Miley’s whole crazy publicity campaign simply a ploy to change the world for the better? Because we’re down with that!
