Happy birthday Miley! On November 23, the plucky popstar turns the ripe old age of 23. We imagine she'll celebrate with a nice quiet night in drinking hot chocolate and watching Downton Abbey.

It’s been nine years since Miley first came to our attention as Hannah Montana, the sweet Disney star with a genetically-inherited achy, breaky heart. Since then she has grown up before our very eyes into a scandalous, loud-mouthed, frequently naked celebrity. Who knew?

Well, with Miley ever venturing into new and occasionally controversial territory every other week, here are some choice wise words for her to take on board from her own former show.

Nobody’s perfect

That's right, Miley. Everyone's a critic - haters gonna hate and sub-tweeters gonna sub-tweet. It's ok to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them.

Embrace change

With a reputation that has developed over years, a style that changes by the week and hair that has minute-by-minute updates, Miley is no stranger to change. Constant reinvention is key to a long career. And it makes your Instagram feed infinitely more interesting.

Remember real life

Don’t confuse the glitz and glamour of fame for a fantasy world. You are still a real person. Never forget that. And never forget that you also once starred in Nicolas Sparks adaptation The Last Song. There are very real consequences to everything you do.

Don’t rely on others

Whether it’s Liam Hemsworth or whatever pop star Miley is feuding with this week, people may stand between you and your dream so it’s always important to first look out for number one. By which we mean, it’s important to step over whoever is in the way of you topping the charts.

Roll with the punches

This should be applied to coping with life’s problems and tragedies, and NOT in relation to whatever substances you get offered in your reckless partying lifestyle.

Is it right to argue with other people?

Maybe it’s time Miley learned to forgive and forget and buried the hatchet? With half of the music industry?

Stand tall above everyone else around you

In this crazy business called show, don’t get caught up in the superficiality of celebrity. Stay true to yourself as an artist and never forget how talented you are. But, y’know, stay humble too.
