MØ Brings The Hits – And Mel C – To Her Headline Roundhouse Show
They sang 'Say You'll Be There' together and everyone went a bit crazy.
Karen Marie Aagaard Ørsted Andersen, better known as MØ, is on the rise.
Hot off her ‘Cold Water’ feature alongside Justin Bieber, which is her second collaboration with Major Lazer (the first, ‘Lean On’, has been streamed by Spotify over 877 million streams at the time of writing), the Danish electro-pop singer is now gearing up for the release of her second album.
Playing to an almost sell-out crowd in London’s roundhouse, "I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd sell out a venue this size," MØ is rounding off the final night of her UK tour. It’s her biggest show in the UK yet. Can MØ nail it?
Yes, of course she can.
Won't you stay?
At least until the sun goes down
When you're gone, I lose faith
I lose everything I have found
Heart strings, violins
That's what I hear when you're by my side
Yeah, that's what I hear when you're by my side
But when you're gone the music goes
I lose my rhythm, lose my soul
So hear me out before you say the night is over
I want you to know that we gotta, gotta carry on
So don't let this be our final song
So don't let this be our final song
So hear me out before you say the night is over
I want you to know that we gotta, gotta carry on
So don't let this be our final song
Baby when we were young
There was nothing to make believe
And the songs that we sang
They were written for you and me
Melodies on repeat
That's what I hear when you're by my side
Yeah, that's what I hear when you're by my side
And when you're gone the music goes
I lose my rhythm, lose my soul
So hear me out before you say the night is over
I want you to know that we gotta, gotta carry on
So don't let this be our final song
So don't let this be our final song
So hear me out before you say the night is over
I want you to know that we gotta, gotta carry on
So don't let this be our final song
Ooh-ooh, take us to a higher ground
Here and now, whatever you do, just don't look down
Ooh-ooh, underneath the disco light, it's alright
We could make the perfect sound
We could make the perfect sound
But when you're gone the music goes
I lose my rhythm, lose my soul
So hear me out before you say the night is over
I want you to know that we gotta, gotta carry on
So don't let this be our final song
So don't let this be our final song (Hey)
So hear me out before you say the night is over
I want you to know that we gotta, gotta carry on
So don't let this be our final song (Hey)
Ooh-ooh, take us to a higher ground
Here and now, whatever you do, just don't look down
Ooh-ooh, underneath the disco light, it's alright
We could make the perfect sound
Ooh-ooh, take us to a higher ground
Here and now, whatever you do, just don't look down
Ooh-ooh, underneath the disco light, it's alright
Don't let this be our final song
The Dane plays a lot of material from her first album, 2014’s No Mythologies To Follow, but it’s MØ’s newer singles that get the biggest reactions from the crowd. New track ‘Drum’, released earlier in October, co-written with CHARLI XCX and produced by the (on-form) knob twiddler Bloodpop – who has just helped produce Lady Gaga’s latest album Joanne – makes the crowd lose it.
From start to finish, there's movement. People are dancing a lot. MØ struggles to stand still herself. Constantly bounding around the stage, she regularly gets low to put her face right in line with the front row’s.
At one point, MØ climbs up into the seating area – where her fellow Dane Christian Eriksen (Spurs midfielder) is in attendance – to make her way round hugging and dancing with fans. Of course, people take a lot of pictures. (Hopefully nobody up there was live streaming it. People who try to live stream gigs should be asked to go home.)
Backed up by a full band, MØ’s sound is beefed up for the live show, and her vocals sound excellent. ‘Kamikaze’, her single from 2015 and the first from her upcoming album, goes off.
Come on and I already know
We gotta go, pick up and ride it
If we wanna fly free (if we wanna fly free)
Barbies and dolls, I wanna be facing them all
Light up a fire, I need to get in too deep
Take me to the party
Kami-Kamikaze
Blame it on the buzz
I am never gonna get enough
Take me to the party
Kami-Kamikaze
Blame it on the buzz
I am never gonna, never gonna get enough
Kamikaze, yeah
Hey, hey, Kami... uh
You say you want
Someone to be wastin' your time
Well I am your partner in crime, boy
You should fly away with me
Saturday night
Was never really meant to do right
So come on, take me to the tide
But we need to get in too deep
Take me to the party
Kami-Kamikaze
Blame it on the buzz
I am never gonna get enough
Take me to the party
Kami-Kamikaze
Blame it on the buzz
I am never gonna, never gonna get enough
Kamikaze, yeah
Hey, hey, Kami...
We got one, two, three 'til the end of the world
We got one, two, three 'til the end of the world
We got one 'til we die, 'til we die
I'm never gonna learn
We got one, two, three, 'til the end of the world
We got one, two, three, 'til the end of the world
We got one 'til we die, 'til we die
I'm never gonna get it, I'm never gonna get...
Take me to the party
Kami-Kamikaze
Blame it on the buzz
I am never gonna get enough
Take me to the party
Kami-Kamikaze
Blame it on the buzz
I am never gonna, never gonna get enough
Kamikaze, yeah
Kami... hey hey (gonna gonna get enough)
Kamikaze...
Hey, hey, kamikaze, yeah
“I’m sorry,” she says, “but Justin Bieber is not here.” MØ then starts singing both Bieber and her own parts to a stripped back version of ‘Cold Water’. A big sing-a-long ensues.
But the biggest sing-a-long (or scream-a-long) was reserved for when MØ brought out the actual Mel C – Sporty Spice – for a duet of ‘Say You’ll Be There’. Obviously, a lot of people went a bit crazy. I doubt there are many pop groups out there who can boast having the lasting appeal and popularity that the Spice Girls do.
To finish off the set, MØ launched into a huge rendition of ‘Lean On’, officially Spotify’s second most streamed song ever. She crowd surfs during the chorus, a huge grin spread across her face. Life could be a lot worse for MØ at the moment.
