Blackhat | MTV Review
Chris Hemsworth is kicking ass and cracking code in this techno-thriller...
UK Release Date: 20 February
Running Time: 135 mins
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Wei Tang
Director: Michael Mann
Plot: Hottie computer genius Nicholas Hathaway (Hemsworth) is doing hard time in a U.S. federal prison after hacking into banks to steal serious money. But then a criminal faction starts using his code to mess with global financial systems. Hathaway’s old buddy Chen Dawai (Leehom Wang), who now works with the government, arranges a furlough so the con can help crack the case. Soon Hathaway is hopping around Asia in a high-stakes pursuit of the perpetrator. And his growing feelings for Chen’s sister, Lien Chen (Wei Tang), only make the situation more complicated.
Best Scene: Hathaway charms Lien by laying out his life philosophy and then laying out some baddies at a restaurant. He’s smart, he’s soulful, and he can throw a punch … swoon!
Date Movie or Mate Movie: With lots of action plus a romantic subplot, ‘Blackhat’ checks all the date-movie boxes.
Scene Stealer: Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis definitely doesn’t get enough screen time, but whenever she does appear, she’s a powerful presence.
WTF Moment: Anytime Hathaway and co. launch into geek-speak as they pore over scrolling screens of code.
Summary: Cyber-crime is always a tricky premise when it comes to keeping us on the edge of our seats (MUST! TYPE! FURIOUSLY!), but born action hero Hemsworth pulls off making keystrokes seem suspenseful. ‘Blackhat’ is a fun and fast-paced popcorn movie, even if we can’t decipher all the chatter about code.
