Black History Month
Black History is World History...
In October 2005 we launched our Black History Month campaign on MTV Base for the first time (long over due I know, but better late than never) which was titled Say It Loud. That conveyed not only the attitude we wanted but also the delivery from the 15 MCs that blessed us with some knowledge on a variety of topics from Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey to The Windrush and Ghanaian Independence. It was such a success that even our peers joined us in celebrating the month (If Jay & Nas can unite, why cant we? The more the exposure, the better I say.) What last year taught us was that people from all walks of life were inspired by what we did.
As a result this years campaign needed to highlight that black history resonates with all of us. So we asked some of our viewers, backed up by some talking heads, to commentate and celebrate black British icons in a variety of fields from sport, music, TV, politics the arts, and separately, on International icons. The narrators holding all these opinions together are some of the UKs finest upcoming MCs; Baby Blue, Loudmouth, No-Lay, Pyrelli, Scorcher and Wretch 32. Many thanks to them and the rest of the contributors for making this project a huge success.
The channel will be taken over for a month by this campaign and will include some specialist programming and music hours giving you a historical insight through some great years in black music. Weve even had some love from the MTV Base Africa team who made a fascinating piece commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Soweto uprising in South Africa.
In addition to our campaign, were also supporting the Mayor Of Londons activities and especially encouraging you to enter the black history scholar competition (See http://www.london.gov.uk/mayor/bhm)
We've covered just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Black History and hopefully in years to come we'll be able to take on board the feedback we receive and investigate other ways to celebrate this month. So please feel free to give us feedback (both positive and negative) including what else you'd like to see us do. You can email me your thoughts at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave them on this very website. Also, dont forget to go to www.mtv.co.uk/overdrive to see all our content at your own leisure.
