FIF: Adwoa Aboah

Find out why Adwoa is our "f**k it!" Queen this week!

HI THERE. Welcome back to F**k It Friday - a weekly feature from MTV Breaks that’s all about saying a big “f**k yeah” to the most excellent people who’ve said “f**k it!” (probably) and taken a leap of faith to make big things happen.

Cos it’s not about just having ideas – it’s about working hard, seizing opportunity, believing in yourself, and 100% following them through!

So who’s next up in the FIF roll call of honour? Drumroll… it’s ADWOA ABOAH!

Adwoa is an incredibly successful 23-year-old model from West London who’s modelled for all the greats including Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. But she’s had a lot of demons to battle.

Growing up, Adwoa was incredibly insecure and always wanted to be the other girls at her school who had blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin. At just 14 she started smoking joints, and her drug use escalated quickly, resulting in an addiction to ketamine. She’s been to rehab several times, gone through depression (she suffers from bipolar disorder), and even tried committing suicide.

But now she’s turned a corner. Opening up was never as easy for Adwoa as putting up a front, but now she’s much better at discussing and acknowledging her feelings. So she became determined to DO something about other girls growing up experiencing similar problems.

So what did she say? She said “f**k it!” (probably) and founded a women’s empowerment charity all about opening up conversations and uniting women against sexism and sexualisation, called Gurls Talk. Inspired by the ‘Free The Nipple’ campaign, Gurls Talk encourages conversations between women about mental health, body image and sexuality, and the idea is that the charity provides them with a completely safe space to do so.

Adwoa believes that girls needed to talk about their struggles, because those struggles unite us all. She told Vogue, “They tell me things they wouldn’t tell anyone, so I’ve got to meet them halfway, I’ve got to start confiding in them… I can’t tell you how nervous that makes me feel. But as soon as I do, you know I’m 23, they’re 15, and we’re still going through the same things.”

Adwoa is also a firm believer that beauty comes from self-love and empowerment. “I think if you don’t like being in your skin, it doesn’t matter how many times people say you’re beautiful, [or] how many jobs you get,” she commented.

Basically, Adwoa is a feminist powerhouse who’s encouraging us to connect with others and discover our own beauty and worth within ourselves. She totally formed Gurls Talk out of her own sheer determination and passion, and that’s why she makes a PERFECT (and extremely photogenic) “f**k it!” Queen. And we’re bowing down to her this week.

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!
