FIF: Hanne Gaby Odiele

Queen.

OH HAY GUYS. It’s Friday, and you know what that means… it’s F**k It Friday time! “F**k it!” Friday is MTV Breaks’ weekly feature that celebrates all the most excellent people who’ve ever said “f**k it!” (probably) in order to take a leap of faith to pursue their passions and chase their dreams.

Let’s face it, half the battle is believing in yourself enough to persevere, right?

So who’s up next in the FIF roll call of honour? Drumroll… it’s HANNE GABY ODIELE!

Hanne Gaby Odiele is a Belgianmodel with an impressive portfolio. She’s graced the pages of Vogue, swept along some of the top runways in the world for household names like Givenchy and Prada, and been the face of campaigns for the likes of Dior and Mulberry.

There’s no doubt that Hanne is at the top of her modelling game. But that’s not the reason she’s our FIF woman of choice this week…

Less than two weeks ago, Hanne revealed something about herself that the public didn’t know in order to live authentically and help raise awareness at the same time. Hanne announced that she is intersex, which means she was born with both male and female sex characteristics (it’s not necessarily about visible variations like having both male and female genitals, it can just be biological – affecting the chromosomes in your DNA).

Hanne was born without a uterus or ovaries, but with both an X and Y chromosome (which makes her genetically male) and internal testes. And she decided to let all her fans know about it.

Basically, Hanne said “f**k it!” (probably) and announced to the world that she was intersex, starting a very important conversation not just about being intersex (which Hanne stated is as common as being born with red hair BTW), but about the horrible nonconsensual surgery that can be experienced because of it. Hanne herself underwent surgeries when she was younger to remove her male biological parts which she was forced into and not given proper information about.

“People want to put us in a box – male or female – but in reality, sex is on a spectrum… I don’t want to have any other kid to suffer the way I did. It’s time to break the stigma,” she said in an Instagram video. She has been working with the charity InterACT Advocates for Intersex Youth since the announcement and encouraging everyone to donate to stop unnecessary surgery on children.

Ever since the news has come out, Hanne has continued to campaign for Intersex human rights through online posts and interviews, and she’s doing a BRILLIANT job at pushing the issue of non-consensual child surgery into the spotlight, and preaching that self-love and embracing diversity are a necessary and important part of life.

FIF Queen? 100%.
