FIF: Luisa Omielan
She's making stand-up sexy.
HELLO and welcome back to Friday with MTV Breaks, which means just one thing… IT’S “F**K IT!” FRIDAY - our day dedicated to all those guys and gals out there who are SMASHING life because they said one thing: “F**k it!” Probably…
Because yes, achieving your life goals is about hard work and dedication, but it’s also about being brave enough to just DO IT exactly the way you want, without caring about obstacles in your way.
But who is our “f**k it!” inspiration today? Drumroll… It’s LUISA OMIELAN!
She’s been named the Queen Bee of comedy and one of ‘the biggest stand up hits of the decade’, and for good reason! She has two comedy shows out, her first one (‘What Would Beyonce Do?’) toured the world with sell-out runs and has now been recorded on a BBC special, and the other called ‘Am I Right Ladies?!’ which is on tour now and already a huge hit.
But why is Luisa our FIF golden gal this week?
Luisa graduated from Salford University with a first in performing arts, but she always had her sights set on being a comedian. Skip forward a decade and Luisa had been through a lot – her brother had attempted suicide, she had been through a devastating heart-crushing break-up AND she was no closer to achieving her stand up dream.
So what did she do? She said “f**k it!” (probably) and decided to write a comedy show that told her story, making herself completely vulnerable, and covering issues like mental health and body image, but in an hilarious and uplifting way. Luisa did comedy the way she wanted to do it, tested it out at gigs and when she went with it to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2012 it became one of the Fringe’s biggest hits, and went on to tour around the US, Singapore and Australia.
Luisa has said her comedy has prompted not only her friends but her audience members as well to tell her about their similar experiences. “Comedy enables me to turn insecurity into fearlessness, to make accessible the things that I was afraid of,” she told The Guardian. “I love making that connection with my audience.”
So what have we learnt from Luisa? Well her dreams came through at the age of 30 because she finally pursued them, and believed in her own ability to bring something new to the comedy scene. “When I arrived at the Edinburgh festival, I had no agent, no industry interest. If anything, the industry actively wasn't interested in me... I had no money, so I couldn't play venues that charged a fee,” she remembered.
Luisa had to not only battle against money issues, but had to battle her own insecurities as well. In an interview with The Guardian she talked about how her success meant the world to her saying, "I know how hard I've worked, how many times I've cried on the kitchen floor going, 'What's the point? Is it ever going to happen?'”
But now she’s taking the world by storm. That’s why Luisa Omielan is without a doubt so very worthy of being our “f**k it!” Friday Queen this week. Her originality, determination and bravery has made her an Irreplaceable new talent in the comedy scene, as Beyoncé would say…
