FIF: Mabel Mcvey
Queen Queen Queen. Happy "f**k it!" Friday!
HI THERE. It’s F**k It Friday time which means MTV Breaks are celebrating the most excellent people who have said “f**k it!” (probably) and taken a leap of faith to make big things happen.
It’s not just about having ideas – it’s about believing in yourself enough to 100% follow them through!
So who’s our FIF chosen one this week? Drumroll… it’s MABEL MCVEY!
Mabel is the offspring of successful music producer Cameron McVey, who has worked with the likes of Massive Attack, and famous sassy 80s/ 90s popstar Neneh Cherry, so (unsurprisingly) she’s got plenty of musical bones in her body.
She studied music production in Sweden before moving to London, and talks about how the music there was totally not her scene. An R&B fan through and through, she felt uncomfortable around the indie music scene over there and really came into her own when she came to London.
The reaction to her debut track Know Me Better, released in 2015, was remarkable. She was named one to watch by the BBC and her song My Boy My Town was hailed by none other than Adele. Mabel admitted in an interview on Radio 1 that seeing Adele Tweet about the song was one of her biggest moments at the time, “I cried, I’m not gonna lie, I cried a lot,” she said.
You may think that having the parents she had, she was bound for inevitable music industry success… but here’s the catch: Mabel was convinced she wanted to do this all by herself without her parents, so that she knew it was her own talent that fuelled her career success.
So what did she say? She said “f**k it!” (probably) and recorded her first song as an unsigned artist using only her friends to help her produce it! In fact, her parents were so uninvolved in her music career that she didn’t even tell them she was writing her own music till she was 16.
Not only has Mabel completely made it off her own back, but she makes all her own creative decisions – it’s Mabel’s way or the highway. She has wanted to be in the music industry since she was five, and she made it all by herself. Oh, and, since she loves fashion, she had her own Swedish fashion blog growing up.
Basically Mabel is the perfect lesson in “f**k it” for sticking to her guns and making her own dreams come true, so she is our inspiration this week. What a dream, f**k it Queen.
HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!
