The man knows how to dress.
Oh hay pals, so it’s FINALLY the end of the week and that can only mean one thing in MTV Breaks Land… it’s “F**k it!” Friday – where we celebrate all the celebs who have hit the big time just by saying those two immortal words, “f**k it”.
Because achieving your goals is not just about envisioning greatness, it’s about being brave enough to stand out and make those goals a reality.
So who’s up next in the FIF roll call of honour? Drumroll… it’s James Flemons!
James is an LA-based designer who created his own fashion line, Phlemuns, in 2013. Featuring large checked prints, lots of denim and plenty of neck scarves (what’s not to love), Phlemuns and its distinctly androgynous and vintage style has BLOWN UP in the fashion industry.
And the stars love him. Celebs like Solange, Miley Cyrus, Tinashe and Zac Efron have all been Phlemunised. Solange in particular is a big fan, having commissioned him to make custom pieces for her numerous times – including pieces for her Don’t Touch My Hair video.
So it’s obvious that James is doing pretty damn well, but why is he our FIF man of the day?
James was drawing throughout his childhood but it was at elementary school, when he became obsessed with drawing all the outfits artists wore in their music videos, that he decided to be a designer.
When he attended The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in California, he became an avid follower of consumer fashion but found his designs started echoing other designers as a result. He also lacked some of the technical skills some of the other students had.
But after he left FIDM James realised that not knowing everything just expanded his creativity and took him away from the beaten path of popular fashion. That’s why he said a big fat “f**k it!” (probably) and unfollowed the trends to enter into uncharted territory…
He created his own unique brand through trial and error. “I’ve realised I’ve gotten such a cool reaction from things that I feel like are coming together so organically and sometimes it ends up being just right on trend with what other people are doing or wanting,” he told Icon House in an interview. But if not from fashion, where does he get inspiration from? Well he gets visual stimulation from just about anywhere including Tblr blogs on things like anime, nature and architecture.
But what we might love best about James is that he expresses his views on diversity and gender fluidity through his fashion. He says he often designs womenswear, translates it to a male body and then turns it back to the female form to create a piece.
He also pays attention to who models his clothes. “I try to showcase diversity and bringing that to a normal place...making it normalized and not so, like, ‘Oh, my gosh, you have a diverse cast of people in these clothes!’ and like ‘Here's an all-Black cast in this.’ Just kind of like, this is the way our world is and this is how it should be presented and normalized. That's just the overall tone of my clothing,” he told Icon House.
For breaking the rules to make his own ones, and for openly expressing his opinions through his fashion, we’re giving James the “f**k it!” crown this week.
We’ve been Phlemunised.
