FIF: Talib Kweli
Find out why Talib Kweli is our "f**k it!" Friday champ this week!
HI THERE. Welcome back to F**k It Friday - a weekly feature from MTV Breaks that’s all about saying a big “f**k yeah” to the most excellent people who’ve said “f**k it” (probably) and taken a leap of faith to make big things happen.
Cos it’s not about just having ideas – it’s about believing in yourself, and making them happen. AMIRIGHT?
So who’s next up in the FIF roll call of honour? Drumroll… it’s TALIB KWELI! Talib is a Brooklyn-based MC and hip-hop mastermind, who’s been smashing the music scene for almost twenty years. Talib’s collaborated with all the greats, including Mos Def (a pal from school), Kanye and Pharrell Williams, but most importantly he’s known in his own right as a super-talented lyricist. Jay-Z even rapped about wanting to be him in his song ‘Moment of Clarity’, stating, “if skills sold/ Truth be told/ I’d probably be/ Lyrically/ Talib Kweli”. Nice!
He’s so super-skilled he could have built a massive career just making music, and playing the industry game. BUT, Talib said the ultimate “f**k it!” when he decided to launch a career based on more than just music – he wanted to make music that mattered.
Whether making a statement about white supremacy, inequality or police violence, Talib uses his profile to point out injustice. In a Revolutionary TV interview he said, “if you know a problem, if you know about injustice and don’t say something then you’re really messing up… if you know you gotta spread the word.”
He’s King among rappers and hip-hop lovers worldwide, but he’s also deserved a very special crown from us today. Talib is our “f**k it” royalty this week, for proving that being yourself and sticking up for others is truly worth it - and we should all be a bit more Talib.
HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!
