F**k It Friday: Kate Winslet
Don't let go, Jack.
HI THERE. Welcome back to F**k It Friday - a weekly feature from MTV Breaks that’s all about saying a big “f**k yeah” to the most excellent people who’ve said “f**k it” (probably) and taken a leap of faith to make big things happen.
Cos it’s not about just having ideas – it’s about believing in yourself, and making them happen. AMIRIGHT?
So who’s next up in the FIF roll call of honour? Drumroll… it’s KATE WINSLET. Kate hit the big time when she starred in James Cameron’s 1997 smash romantic drama ‘Titanic’, playing Rose, its passionate heroine. She’s now one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses… but how did she land her big break?
SHE SAID “F**K IT”, AND MADE IT HAPPEN. In an interview for Rolling Stone magazine the year after ‘Titanic’s’ release, Kate described how she got the part of Rose. She said she simply read the script, thought, “I’ve absolutely got to be a part of this. No two ways about it”, and got her agent to find James Cameron’s number. Then she said “f**k it!” (probably) and CALLED HIM UP.
James Cameron was in the car at the time, and had to pull over to talk to her. She told him, “I just have to do this, and you are really mad if you don’t cast me.” Not only did she convince Cameron to take her on, but she also resolved to persuade Leonardo DiCaprio to star opposite her because she thought, “I’m not doing it without him, and that’s all there is to it”. Wow.
This year Kate dedicated her BAFTA to all the young women out there who doubt their potential, saying, “when I was only 14 I was told by a Drama teacher that I might do OK, if I was happy to settle for the fat girl parts. Look at me now”. She then advised girls who had been put down by friends, teachers or parents to ignore negative comments and to just “keep doing it, keep believing in yourself”.
Essentially Kate has given us a lesson in f**k it, which is why she’s not just Hollywood royalty, but our F**k It Queen this week. Dream big, guys!
