"F**k It!" Friday: Oprah
She got scouted when she was 19... here's how Oprah made it BIG.
Welcome back to MTV Breaks’ own Friday feature… it’s “F**k It!” Friday – our celebration of all the celebs who knew what they had to do to break the internet, and the world… they said “f**k it!” (probably).
Because let’s face it, no-one ever gets big by playing it safe – taking risks and putting yourself out there is a big part of career success.
So who’s up next in our FIF hall of fame? It’s OPRAH!
Everyone knows Oprah - she’s so famous she doesn’t even need a surname. She’s a talk show host, actress, producer and philanthropist who doesn’t do things by halves. By 1986, the Oprah Winfrey Show became the number one daytime American talk show. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Obama in 2013, the same year she was ranked number one in Forbes’ Celebrity 100 most powerful celebrities… for the 5th time. Oh and she was the first African-American woman to become a billionaire. EVER.
So Oprah has absolutely made TV history, but why is she our FIF Queen this week?
Oprah started presenting radio at just 16, and did so well that at 19 she was called up and offered a job in TV. Even though Oprah had never even considered a career in television, thinking she’d be a teacher, she said “f**k it!” (probably) and quit college to pursue her career at CBS. She became a news anchor almost immediately.
Although everyone told her she had made it and encouraged her to carry on being a news anchor, Oprah felt that something didn’t quite fit – reporting was a bit unnatural for her. So she said a further “f**k it!” and followed her heart, turning her attention to TV talk shows. And she knew, from hosting her very first one, that she had found where she belonged.
As a talk show host, Oprah was always completely honest and open about herself and her own past as well as being a great listener and interviewer… and that’s what really made her a star. She also gained respect over the years for refusing to cover trashy tabloid topics like other talk show hosts.
Oprah is a true FIF role model for always, always following her instincts and making difficult career choices (like dropping out of school) when she knew it was the right move for her. Although she was treading where no-one like her had dared to tread, Oprah was fierce, ambitious and determined in chasing her career dreams, even when people doubted she’d make it. That’s why she’s our inspo (and MAJOR girl crush) this week.
HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!
