Meet MTV Breaks EMA Graphic Design Winner Julie

She'll be joining us in Milan for the EMA!

We're so super excited to introduce you to the winner of our 2015 EMA MTV Breaks graphic design opportunity - Julie Kvaale from Norway.

The judges loved her unique and creative entry, so she'll be working with the EMA design team helping to create cue cards and winner's envelopes!

With less than two weeks to go until the night of the EMA in Milan, we thought we'd let you get to know Julie a little better...

What made you decide to enter MTV Breaks?

At my house, the television is on all the time, and I’ll be as honest to say that MTV is the channel I watch the most. I saw the TV commercial for this year’s competition, and thought: why not? Since the vignettes of last year’s winners aired on TV, I’ve been interested. Working with MTV is something you just joke about, as it’s so unreal. But still, you won’t win unless you try.

How did you feel when you found out your entry had been chosen out of thousands of others?

When I got the call that I had won the competition, I was completely out of words. I managed to squeeze out a few words: “Are you serious?”. I took several days before I managed to understand it. Actually it did not happen until recently, and I’m starting to get really excited.

Do you have any particular designers or designs that you admire most?

My main source of getting inspiration is creative websites such as behance and pinterest. I like designs that are clean and simple, and there are many unknown designers who use this style. I also love illustration, and I get a lot of inspiration from illustrators such as Viscera Vicarious, Tim Hastings, Joshua Smith, Stef Azevedo, Conrado Salinas and Dan Chase.

What’s your ultimate career aspiration?

My goal is to have a job that I love. A job that I’m looking forward to go to every day. It doesn’t need to be a large reputable firm, but a workplace that can offer exciting work and creative leeway. Some of my many dreams is to work with fashion design, art and advertising/branding.

What are you looking forward to most at the EMAs?

The whole experience really. I’ve been a fan of MTV’s award shows as long as I can remember, and to actually be going is so unreal. I look forward to working with Hello Charlie, and really get to try what it’s like to work in a big agency. And of course I’m looking a lot forward to the show, and maybe get to see some of the stuff I’ve made live. That would have been sick!
