WCW: Halima Aden
She's SUCH a babe.
It’s WOMAN CRUSH WEDNESDAY TODAY, which means it’s time for us at MTV Breaks to celebrate all the women who are out there doing their thang and making the female population mega proud.
Whether they’re a champion for human rights, or an unbelievable career woman, any gal that’s smart, motivated and ambitious is super-sexy. And, yeah, we definitely would.
So which sensational señorita are we celebrating (and crushing on majorly) today? Drumroll… it’s HALIMA ADEN!
Halima is a 19-year-old model who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp and moved to the US at the age of 6. She first grabbed everybody’s attention late last year by competing in the Miss Minnesota US beauty pageant and proudly wearing her hijab throughout. In fact, she was the very first hijab-wearing contestant to enter the Miss USA competition, and she went down like a storm.
Halima got signed by IMG Models before landing her catwalk debut for none other than Kanye West in his Yeezy Season 5 show, one of the biggest in New York Fashion Week. Now she has featured on her first magazine cover – for Issue 10 of CR Fashion Book.
Not only has Halima Aden given the fashion world a fresh perspective and lined herself up with a very promising career in the industry by being 100% herself, but she’s also very vocal about the messages she’s sending girls everywhere.
In her interview for the CR Fashion Book, Halima emphasised that modelling wearing her hijab doesn’t mean she expects other Muslim women to wear hijabs or that she’s the poster girl for Islam, it means that women should be able to look 100% themselves and not try to become something they’re not to please the industry.
“I got a lot of Instagram comments like, ‘Oh, you don’t have your neck covered, you’re not a Muslim!’” Halima told CR Fashion Book. “My thing is, stop judging women, especially if you’re a man… A lot of people have the misconception that, as a Muslim woman, I am somehow against women wearing bikinis. No, I want women to feel comfortable and confident in whatever they wear.”
It’s not just Muslim women Halima is empowering, but any woman who feels she has to look a certain way in order to be beautiful. Halima remembered how she started her journey envisioning she would send out a positive message to young Muslim girls, but that she ended up inspiring more girls and women than she thought. “I’ve heard stories from parents who are Christians, telling me, ‘Thank you, I want my seven-year-old daughter to know that you don’t have to be half-naked to be beautiful’” she said.
Basically, Halima Aden = Queen. She didn’t let the status quo affect the way she portrayed herself as a model and she TOTALLY broke through boundaries and unleashed a fresh new perspective within the fashion/ modelling industry on female beauty.
“I signed with the top modelling agency in the WORLD and still wore my hijab as my crown. Don’t ever change yourself… Change the game,” she captioned a modelling photo on Instagram. We’re obsessed.
HAPPY WEDNESDAY EVERYONE!
