WCW: Selena Gomez

Why we're majorly crushing on Selena this week... (more than usual)

HEY THERE and welcome to Woman Crush Wednesday, a weekly feature from MTV Breaks where we raise our glasses to all the fabulous females who are out there conquering life’s taboos and stereotypes, and who are just generally making the world a better place to live day by day.

Because regardless of looks, a woman that’s smart, motivated and ambitious is super-sexy and (let’s face it) we would.

So which sensational señorita are we celebrating (and crushing on majorly) today? Drumroll… it’s SELENA GOMEZ!

Starting off as a child star at just 14 on ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’, Selena’s gone from strength to strength, soaring effortlessly into the movie and music industries while being supported by her continuous ARMY of loyal fans. Oh, and she’s also raked in a staggering 103 MILLION followers on Instagram (which makes her the most followed person on Instagram EVER).

But Selena’s career achievements run deeper than Insta followers and chart hits. Selena’s been suffering from mental health problems for a while now, but recently she’s really been committed to being as open and honest as possible about them, which has massively helped raise awareness about anxiety and depression, as well as the rare autoimmune illness she has called lupus.

In August, Selena decided to take a break from her career in an attempt to recover and get help… But now she’s back! She made her first public appearance since the break at the American Music Awards this week and (obvs) she’s won an AMA for Best Female Pop/ Rock Artist. No biggie.

Basically, her acceptance speech made us fall a little (a lot) in love. “I had to stop because I had everything… and I was absolutely broken inside,” she admitted. “I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.”

But this is our fave line of the speech: “If you are broken you do not have to stay broken.”

At just 24, Selena’s already achieved so much. But her biggest achievement is her attitude towards her fans – she is committed to spreading awareness about mental illness and encouraging those who are struggling with their mental health to also seek help. And that’s why we’re MASSIVELY crushing on Selena Gomez today. Even more than usual.

HAPPY WEDNESDAY EVERYONE!
