Get To Know: AMARIA BB

This week we get to know Jamaican born and London raised artist; AMARIA BB...

Growing up, AMARIA BB was surrounded by a wide range of music and sounds, which is no surprise when you see her list of musical influences. From Lauryn Hill, to Buju Banton, Nina Simone and Crazy Cousinz, these artists reflect some of the diverse genres she was exposed to, which now influence the music she makes today.

A natural songwriter, AMARIABB developed her pen by rewriting songs from alternative perspectives and even freestyled her track ‘Fundz’ in one take. With shows and support slots scheduled throughout the year, she promises to bring the vibes and energy to her live shows and we can’t wait!

Get To Know - AMARIA BB

1. For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from...

I was born in Jamaica and moved to London (Hackney) when I was really young. Growing up I was exposed to a vast and diverse array of sounds, from jazz standards and rare groove to 90s R&B, reggae, dance hall and funky house. My music takes elements from all of those genres and is a reflection of the environments I was raised in.

2. Who/what inspired you to start a career in music?

I discovered my voice by accident when I was around 8-years-old. Once I knew I could sing I used to sing and perform all the R&B classics to my family and friends. Then I got into rewriting as in comeback versions from another perspective which helped organically develop my songwriting.

3. Who are your biggest musical influences?

I would have to say some of my biggest influences are the artists that were on heavy rotation in my household growing up: Lauryn Hill, Jagged Edge, Etta James, Buju Banton, Nina Simone, and Crazy Cousinz.

4. Tell us about the writing and recording process of your new release...

'Fundz' was as natural as it comes, I didn't write any lyrics down, I freestyled the track all in one take.

5. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

At the age of 10 going to New York to perform at the legendary Harlem Apollo to represent the UK at the Harlem Vs. Hackney event.

6. Who would you be your dream collaboration and why?

My dream collaboration wouldn't be possible unless someone like Elon Musk invents a time machine where we can go back in time. If we're talking about artists out now, over the last year or so I would say Teyana Taylor, Kehlaniand Summer Walkerare artists I would be interested in collaborating with.

7. Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?

I can’t say I've ever been starstruck, not to say I wouldn't.

8. If you could only listen to one song on repeat for the rest of time what would it be and why?

One song would be difficult in all honesty, it would have to be the playlist my mum curated and played throughout her pregnancy with me, which I still play 'till this day.

9. What’s on your playlists that people wouldn’t expect?

Daft Punk - 'One More Time'

10. What can we expect from your live shows?

Vibes, energy, interaction, upliftment, and explosiveness!

11. Have you got any fun livestreams/online events planned for this year? / When can we see you live?

I’ve got gigs all throughout the year, I’m doing exclusive events in London and major cities across the UK to be announced. Stonebwoy reached out to me to support his UK tour in November which I’m really excited about.
